I would have entered this (extemporised 5am 15/9/08)

right here was my prairie and it was golden
it swayed as it danced to wind-kisses
the only music of the heart’s glad step
yesterday the stubble burned as I slept
hard men rattled at the drill and the harrow
where wheat was is greyed-out to sky
still I cling to a stubborn year or two
watching others float like outworn ideas
my fingers so numb I forget to say goodbye
