Al is a brilliant poet.
The strength of Al's poetic voice comes in careful, tightly crafted storytelling and brilliant observation on the human condition. Al's poetry extends far beyond the reaches of his New York City home.
His voice touches each of us who have the privilege of reading him. It touches us because he is us.
Al is a gentle, kind and loyal man. He is lovely and lovable and one of my truest, dearest friends.
Would you join me in honoring him by writing with him in mind?

now inside
i have come to be
a part of you
found my place
between retrospect
and dream
where i will remain
silent
long after
believed forgotten
as scars
are the memory of skin
you'll carry me
with you
then one day
recall cummings
while busy with your flowers
and find me
hidden there
among lilacs
and young pears
hear my voice
again
and know
i loved
rules

You may honor him in whichever way you deem most appropriate.
You may write about him or emulate him- or a piece of his writing just may have touched you or inspired you and you write about that.

- Final notes: This was so much more difficult than i imagined it would be. I knew i was in trouble when the first poem that hit the contest set a high bar...
you are all amazing poets- how does one judge something this difficult when there is such admiration put on paper .. and done so well ...

Ohhh...He so deserves this, Mary. What a delight you are to honor him thusly. I'm quite sure the entries will be plentiful, devoted & humble. Al IS a brilliant writer, after all. And a wonderful friend, too, from what I've seen. Good luck to all who enter. Give the man his due, people. He earned it.

I have been a fan and loyal reader of AJ's for a long time now, and I have often been touched by his poetry, and considered myself blessed to know his words. I will most certainly work on something for this.
