Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on September 16, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 1000, Honorable mention: 3 people
- Final notes: A big "Welcome!" to all of you talented poets who joined us for the week of September 13, 2008. This is trista, and I'm happy to let you know I'll be hosting the PO contests for the next couple of weeks also, as Bear continues his last-minute packing and moving arrangements. We miss ya, Bear!
Just a couple of quick notes before I get to our winners...
Firstly, I want to thank all of my co-judges for doing such an awesome job. The time and care each of you put into the comments and scoring of entries is very appreciated, and the PO contests wouldn't be what they are without you! Due to a family emergency, Cupcrazy was unable to join us this week, but hopefully we'll see her again next week. You may have also noticed a new face in the "judges chambers"...we welcome Lost Vampyre Angel and hope she'll be returning often to help out. Having critiqued entries all night, staying up until almost 6am to finish, tells me she'll be a natural at this, lol, as I don't think a one of us judges haven't done that at least once. Hehe. Welcome aboard, Bri!
As for our entering poets...it was wonderful to see some "old faces" we haven't seen in a while, as well as exciting to see several "new" faces. For all of you, I hope you'll have found this to be a good experience for you with at least a few suggestions you'll have found to be helpful in your writing. Don't forget to check out and join the new PO group, where you'll keep up to date on past and current PO contests, can ask questions and offer any suggestions you may have.

Okay...let's get to the exciting part, huh? Our winner...with a total of 576.65 points out of a possible 600....is.....
"Reanimated Corpse" by Xianaria ! This is a poet who never seems to have an "off day", and I hope you'll take a few minutes to read his work if you haven't already. Great job once again, Tim!
Moving right along, our Silver trophy...with a score of 570.70...goes to....
"Quilled" by cutiepie ! This was one of the most unique themes we saw this week, so if you still have questions about what can be considered "unique", check it out! Congrats, cutiepie!
Bronze, with a total of 561.75...goes to...
"Flower Dreams" by KayJay45 ! This was just an all-around lovely write, and proof not every theme has to be "different" to place well in a PO contest. Nice job, Ken!
Our HM's, in order, are...
559.20....."It's Just My Nature" by light insight
558.65.... "The Long Sleep" by WWildBill
549.40.... "Whirlwinds of Fate" by Tirrell
Congratulations to all of our winners!
On a personal note, while I enjoyed every single entry, I am finding we've see fewer truly unique themes and awe-inspiring poems lately. I know what an effort it can be when there's little, if anything, that's "never" been written about, but I challenge each one of you to really dig deep when penning for the PO's.
Before we get to individual scores, I'd like to leave you with a quote for the week...
"We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out. "
~Ray Bradbury

Well for my first proper POW judging I'd say that went quite well considering it is 20 to 6am here in london and I managed to comment on you all. Id like to thank you all for entering such wonderful poems and Really they were all great and we all know they will just get better and better because that's how these contests work..right ^^ Well you all did Fantastic but the people with the highest scores got my attention the most and keep in mind where one of you could have been perfect in grammar another could be perfect in originality. so we all have different strengths and weaknesses, Hope to see you next time.!

Aloha Julie!! And Bear….
Well another great week for PO…
All entries were well penned for the
most part. I still am not seeing the
WOW factor in most…in fact there
was a lot of cliché again this week…
and elementary rhyme….I guess I
just want to see something out of the
ordinary…as in the past…
Please note to all: I do not consider
most poetry written about love, nature,
death, or the human conditions, such as
depression, hate, or self evaluation,
unique…..You have to go really a long
way, in great poetic form to catch my
attention on those topics…..Bear included
unique themes…..as inspiration…still I
didn’t find it this week…with that being said;
I hope to see everyone again next week…with
fresh thoughts, focused lines, and imagery!!
Write on everyone!!
Best wishes in the contest!!

I've been away for abit. But I think I'll make my rounds of commenting again ^^ Wish I could have made it back in time to enter.

Are the word restraints gone now? -

Welcome back!

Thanks so much for your support of the other poets...we appreciate it, and I'm sure the poets do also.
And yes...the restriction on filler words has been lifted...but still a good idea to use them sparingly and wisely.
Sorry you missed this week, but hopefully we'll see you next week!

Wow, thank you for the gold!

Congrats to the other winners! -
wow this is a difficult and very critical contest that i will not be entering again. ever. u seem to put limits on the unlimited. poetry is the most authentic thing in the world and bcuz of rules about grammer and punctuation which really never should or have applied to most poetry, it has become a sheep following sheep affect. but thanx 4 the exceedingly hard and judgemental challenge.

Yes, we do set a Challenge before your quill...limits are only for those who don't know how to work around them.....I'm sorry you won't be joining us to try again ~

Hi there

“bcuz of rules about grammer and punctuation which really never should or have applied to most poetry,”
I’m not sure where your information about grammar and poetry comes from, but I would have to disagree with you for a number of reasons...and I’d like to refer you to a favorite passage from “Creating Poetry” by John Drury...
"Grammar may seem like a tedious subject, but the word is related to "glamour"; originally grammar was seen as a kind of magic, or rather as the means of handling the magic of language.
Knowing something about grammar will help your poems in several ways: first of all, you can be your own best proofreader, avoiding errors that might make a literate reader scoff; second, you will have more tools at your disposal, more ways to bend and shape language; third, you will be in a better position to BREAK the rules of grammar successfully if you know what they are."
To me, it's exciting to think of grammar and language as "magic"!
I too am sorry you won’t be joining us again...but hope you might eventually change your mind. I believe if a writer can first prove he/she understands good grammar, they will be better able to defend their work when they CHOOSE to break the “rules”, rather than when they simply make “mistakes”.
I wish you all the best in your writing endeavors.
