Poetry is special to me because it is based on one persons interpretation. Each of us may look at the same, but in describing what we see, we will all have our vision and our expressions for that vision will all be different.
This contest is an exercise in interpretation...and a learning exercise for me and my 11 year old daughter. This contest is inspired by recent events in my household, whereas I saw a particular situation one way and accepted the possibility that it could be looked at in more than one way. My lovely daughter saw the situation her way and only her way and would under no circumstances accept that it could be viewed any other way. It was not a matter of right or wrong that got our situation so blown out of perportion...it was a closed mind. That closed mind causes me so many concerns for my daughter, she is so young and so full of herself and believes she knows it all. Of course, my daughter is her mother's daughter (much as I hate to admit it), so getting her to open her mind will require a delicate, more subtle approach. My out of the box thinking has brought me to this contest. Each of you selected to this contest is a favorite of mine, but more importantly, you are also a favorite of hers. I do believe that she will gain some valuable insight from reading what each of you write and she will respect what each of you have to say. The picture I have chosen is a favorite of mine, one that my daughter has seen and has asked why I like it. So I think it is a good choice for this exercise.
I know, based on what I've read from each of you in the past months, you will write with all the flare and passion that has made you special to me. I admire the honesty of your writing and respect the fire and passion that you each consistently share with your poetry. I am confident that my daughter will be more open minded if she sees that from each of you there is a different take on the same picture. I ask that you share your gift and talent with me now, so that I may share it with her. I ask that you write knowing that what you write will be molding the mind of a young impressionable child. I thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, in advance for the effort I know you will each put into this contest.
So...what I'd like to see is exactly what you see.
No restrictions, except maybe no more than 40 or so lines.
One last favor...please, pretty please...could you each add a note in AN area inviting my daughter Alix to read what you have written. She will just die and think she has gone to heaven, getting an invitation from each of you.
I will be asking Alix to comment on each entry, as well as myself, so you will each get to hear from her what her impressions were.
She will be the judge for the contest, so she will be putting each entry in the winning order. I ask that each of the winners of this contest, use the winning points to pay it forward by hosting a contest for our young writers, or by donating the points to one of them so that they can host.
Again...I thank you from the bottom of my heart for participating. Now go write something genius...I can't wait to hear back from each of you.
God Bless!!!! Hugs!!!
Each of you are cordially invited...

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on September 15, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 500, Silver: 300, Bronze: 200, Honorable mention: 16 people
- Final notes: This was an unbelieveably difficult contest to judge...all of the entries were so heart felt and full of beautiful wisdom and advise. Alix and I arranged and rearranged the order so many times, we finally gave up and decided that each of you are winners and deserve something. so besides the 3 trophies..the rest of you will receive an honorable mention with points and trophies. More than the award and recoganization, you each should feel proud of the strong statements you have made and the impact your words have made on my 11 year old daughter...not to mention the impact you've permanently etched upon my heart. I thank you most sincerely for your participation and for sharing a piece of yourself with my family.
If you have time...read from the top of the list and feel all the love that was shared in each of the entries.
Alix has placed the poems in her favorite order...and I must say, except in one or two instances...I agree with her...amazing isn't it?
Thank you all again...until next time.
Be Well,
Shelly your nevadapoet and Alix

There are no closed minds.

I am both surprised and honored by the invitation to help mold a young mind (and slightly scared as well, lol). I will definitely ponder on this one and try to keep it short. LOL
