Throughout history the art of poetry has be used to expose issues that higher stronger authorities, organizations and ruling societies have sought to leave hidden and unaddressed. I want to see Spoken Word pieces here. If your not sure of the form, check out some of my pieces or some of the other artists from the Spoken Word Poets Society. You can use whatever rhythm you choose but I am partial to syncopation. I want to see issues addressed. I want to see passion and conviction and a demand for change. Pretend your running for office or the head of a Civil Rights Group or trying to influence congress. Whatever it takes, make it moving!!
Knock 'em dead!

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on September 24, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 900, Silver: 300, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 4 people
- Final notes: Wow!! This was an amazing contest. The turn out was unbelievable and I have all of you to thank for it!
The judging was difficult to say the least. There were 29 entries and all of them were awesome poems. The criteria for the contest was as follows:
1) Must be Spoken Word Form
2) Must address an issue
3) Must reflect passion and personal conviction
4) Must move your reader
Although all of the entries here were incredibly written, out of the 29 entries, only 7 met the first criteria. I recognize Spoken Word is not that popular on Allpoetry.com but this turn out was at least double of what we have had in previous contests.
The judging went as follows:
GOLD - "We Got Heart"
Silver - "Thin is In"
Bronze - "Bravery"
Honorable Mentions went too:
"What'chu mean by revolution?"
"A Different Bell"
"Memo to Palin"
I invite all of you to visit these incredible poems and read them for yourself. For those of you interested in learning more about Spoken Word form, please visit the group "Spoken Word Poets Society" on Allpoetry.com where we interact and build our craft.
Thanks again for all of your wonderful entries and I hope to see you again in poetic cyberspace.
One Love,
John

I feel stupid but I have never heard of this group or the type of poem. Could you give me a link to it or at least an idea of what type of poem to write.

'Spoken Word Form' ... what the heck?
I don't know what in the world you mean by 'Spoken Word Form'. The guy who did the Wikipedia article on it doesn’t know either. Like me, he thinks it’s when you perform a poem. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoken_word -

Hmm... I didn't even see an entry from you but I assume your curiosity is sincere and not merely confrontational. Spoken Word poets do perform there pieces but merely reading a poem does not make it spoken word and it must be written first. There are rhythms in words and spoken word poets rhyme rhythms rather than concentrating merely on rhyming the syllables in words. Also, the rhythm tends to be syncopated, rhyming ends of lines with the beginnings or middle of others; even rhyming a word with a phrase. Again, if you are genuinely interested and would like to see some examples, please feel free to visit the "Spoken Word Poets Society" on this site.
Also, most of my poetry is Spoken Word so you can visit that as well. I categorized them so you can do a search by category if you wish and I believe other poets have done the same.
Thanks for dropping by.
One,
John -
Here's an illustration of what I mean by rhyming the rhythm rather than the word and the syncopation that one can play with as a result. If you have problems finding that rhythm, try reading the aloud.
