And now for something completely different...

Time for another contest. This time I will give you three options. If you can combine two or all options, you are automatic finalist.

First option, double entendre. This means to use with double meaning, words with two (or more) interpretations, one that is delicate, and one that is indelicate, if you like.

Second option, I want you to write a Monchielle. This is a form I made some time back, and it has spread all over the poetic world. First line repeats in each stanza, it consist four stanzas in total, each stanza consists of five lines, each line consists of six syllables, and lines three and five rhyme. The pattern is "Abcdc Aefgf Ahiji Aklml".

Third option, you must use ten or more words from this word bank: (Acid, Barnacle, Crunchy, Devious, Easy, Figment, Greasy, Happy, Icy, Jiffy, Killing, Living, More, Nosy, Open, Pepper, Q-tip, Rubles, Soft, Tall, Umbrella, Vent, Wife, X-ray, Yesterday, Zen.) Mark which words you used in the authors comment.

Over to the dreadful rules.

* First of, I want rhymes.
* Rhythm is preferred, but not a must (except option two, obviously).
* I want no CAPS LOCK, no AltErnAtIng, no 1337-speak, no decorations.
* No cutting or suicide, no abuse or grotesque imagery.
* Erotic or adult poetry is allowed, but mark your poem properly (in title and categories), so no children can read it.
* Cursing and swearing is allowed, but keep it to a minimum.
* No slandering or hate.
* I might add more rules at any time, and disqualify those who violate the new rules with their submitted poem.
* Oh yeah, and no prewrites. That is all.

The prizes:

1st place gets 300 points and a gold trophy, 2nd place gets 200 points and silver trophy, and 3rd gets 100 points and a bronze trophy. More points may be added later for honorable mentions.

Now, write!!

EDIT! I won a few points in a couple of contests I was in, so now I can give points to silver and bronze winners too!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on September 17, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100
  • Final notes:
Being only four entries in this contest, it was extremely hard to judge. I went through each poem thoroughly, looking for things like double entendres, rhymes (and general rules of Monchielle form, if used), words from the word bank, plus ofcourse the other rules mentioned. I set a score, which I added after first message was sent to the author, and updated this when I saw changes made (according to suggestions).

Here's my judgment of this contest:

1st place, "New Orleans Blues" at http://allpoetry.com/poem/show/4579023 was using all three options, double entendre, Monchielle form, and the word bank. The flow was off, but I found it appropriate for the theme of the poem.

2nd place, "Icy Skies" at http://allpoetry.com/poem/4580384 was a very good Monchielle, and the author used the word bank well. The flow was good except for three lines. I was amazed with the nice imagery used in this poem. Could easily have won the gold.

3rd place, "Neighbor to Neighbor" at http://allpoetry.com/poem/4569191 used ALL the words in the word bank, and though it did not follow the rule of six syllables per line, it was a Monchielle of sorts. Maybe we shall call this Fat Monchielle?

4th place, "Today We Remember 9/11" at http://allpoetry.com/poem/4589141 was a nice Monchielle, following the rules of the form, with good rhymes. It was however the only entered poem using only one option, and thus got last.

Thanks to everyone for joining my contest, I am looking forward to do another one soon.

    Jim

Well, as the creator of the form I refer to use iambic trimeter or trochaic trimeter, and I keep the same foot and meter throughout the poem if possible. If I can't keep it the same, I try to be consistent throughout the stanzas. You can find more about the form by reading my column "To Write A Monchielle (Monchielle)" at http://allpoetry.com/column/show/1616570 or view examples by me and others in my list at http://allpoetry.com/list/23837-Monchielle (my own poems listed at the bottom). But the thought is that as long as you follow the main rules, the meter is up to you, as long as it flows good, and is not forced. Monchielle is hard in the beginning, but when you get the form in, it is easier and easier. I am looking forward to reading your poem! Jim

Thank you for the great contest. It was tough to fit word bank words in that format, but I enjoyed the challenge. Congratulations to all the winners.
