ANIMAL

Literal Mythological Symbolic or Metaphoric
All and Any Classifications

Please don't give me cute cuddly pet stories.

No rules other than that one but I would prefer free verse or if rhyming make sure it doesn't sound forced.

Take the idea of 'Animal' anywhere you want but keeping the dignity and rawness of animal nature, without wrapping it up too much in projected 'humanistic niceties'.

For example only:
I was thinking along the lines of how different animals embody and represent particular qualities, which we recognise in ourselves. This is not only accepted but encouraged, just like Native American 'spirit stone' symbols can be used as archetypes for this.

Examples:

Bear    - Strength
Turtle  - Security
Frog    - Cleansing, Healing
Horse  - Power

Otter   - Laughter

Owl     - Wisdom, Seeing through deception

Bee     - Organisation

Snake - Transformation

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on September 23, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 1000, Silver: 500, Bronze: 300, Honorable mention: 6 people
  • Final notes:
Much thanks to all for entering this contest.
There are some amazing writes here!
I feel I could really have done with a couple more shiny trophies to give out and had to curb myself from reaching for a fair few more 'green ones'.

Having said that, the Gold and Silver I found to be unquestionable, as both these writes were exactly along the lines of what I was Ideally hoping to appear. Thank you so much for them!

A special mention for Dawn Kestrel, I believe the youngest entrant here, who came up with her wonderful write 'Foxie'.

The very best to you all

    Sol

    be an animal...

maybe a cat or a lion? a wolf with two cold yellow eyes? a trickster, a thief, maybe a jumpy jackrabbit?
a vulture, a deer, or giraffe? or maybe a dolphin or bear, there's too many creatures to choose from..
I think there's a zoo in my hair

    excellent contest idea!

Zoos, and hair for that matter, are also most welcome.
... mm a sort of universal Medusa.

Baboon - Hailer of the dawn.

Why is it I keep finding that more amusing than I should?
    lol

That tickles me also... could be because they're so anthropoid and that they do a better job of hailing than most of the human ones?

Okay it's time for one of my cheap seat specialties -- since I've been sitting here going through the symbolic meaning of animals and happened across the bat which reminded me of one of the first few contests I entered here..

so without further ado I bring you the bat
    Bat - Guardian of the night, cleaner, obscurity, messenger, double nature, happiness, good luck, longevity, peace;
also - hypocrisy, melancholy, revenge, wisdom.

A bat in my own belfry
    seems just right to me,
when I had to think about
    the creature I might be.
For one fine day I'd be a bat,
    that critter of the dark,
after all it's not a stretch
    they're in my attic parked.

    A batty bat, imagine that,
that's who I'd choose to be,
as fruity as a fruitcake bake,
yep that's the one for me.

I'll hang out in the belfry's
    pursuing buzz of thought,
    gleaning gossip grandly
    from batty bakers brought.

    Perhaps I'll haunt the attic
there's lots of room up there.
    I'll roll around the marbles,
that ought to get a stare.

With radar sight I'll fly the night,
and coast the hours till dawn,
    insomnia will be my friend,
    and leather wings I'll spawn.

Yes for sure, I'd be a bat,
    that creature so much feared,
'cause bats are just so oddly,
and we all know I'm weird.

LOL, love that last line. I ADORE bats! Always have. The first school project I ever did on an animal was a bat. I think they're gorgeous and clever....AND I think you should enter.

        I love bats, always have..
A few years back I took a course to become a phlebotomist ( in English -- those nasty people who draw blood for medical tests ) I don't work as one and never did ( long story ) but because I did that I get to say I'm a certified vampire which makes the bat that much better.

I might, if I can decide who I am...

phlebotomist....bizarre name....makes me think of phlegm ...like a phlebotomist is someone who makes you cough up chunks in a little container and then analyzes it.

lol, sorry, too much disgusting imagery. Hope you're not eating.

Love it! 'bakers brought' ... I like the idea of 'baker's talk'... apart from that it's perfect!

You'll never decide completely because who 'you' are isn't amongst them; you are them.

I love Bob! Just a few plucked out lines amongst those which ever stay with me:

'You took my reality and cast it to the wind
and I 'aint ever gonna' be the same again'

          'I can't undo what's been gone baby
          I can't un-ring the bell'

'But I care nothing for that game,
          where beauty goes unrecognised'

where passion rules the arrow which flies'
