door…any door
and if you are able to achieve simplicity and impact
like Richard Brautigan does, you’ll get more than a hearty welcome…

Please welcome Cannonsfire as my co-judge.
Hinged to Forgetfulness like a Door
Richard Brautigan
Hinged to forgetfulness like a door,
she slowly closed out of sight,
and she was the woman that I loved,
but too many times she slept like
a mechanical deer in my caresses,
and I ached in the metal silence
of her dreams.
Rules:
~ short, powerful poetry (preferably)
~ go for simplicity & impact
~ apply poetic devices
~ left align; plain background
~ free verse only
I Am Summoned by a Door
Richard Brautigan
I am summoned by a door
but forgotten by the knock
and left standing here alone
in a long silent hall, like
a marble intestine, that knows
my name.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on August 27, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 600, Silver: 300, Bronze: 150, Honorable mention: 7 people
- Final notes: I closed the contest early because with 35 great entries we already had a task on our hands. Wonderful entries alll around which Chez and I thoroughly enjoyed – we heard you knocking, poets and we would like to peek inside any of your doors! The winners were those we felt had the “Brautigan-touch” about them, especially the first 6 finalists and the last one. The gold trophy winner was pure Brautigan! The other 3 finalist were just plain good poetry. Thank you so much for this experience, poets – and a big thank you to my co-judge – what a pleasure to have you here with me.

How about?
Any door; really?
Okay, Morrison as Brautigan, back in the library.
-
-
You can wink all you like Rob, I know you like the Brautigan challenge (and throw Morrison in just for flavour)
-
Ahhh, the Lizard King doth cometh to call.
Congratulations, Rob. I watched Oliver Stone's movie "The Doors" with Val Kilmer just last night. You're much more...everything...than he was. Poet, prophet, man, friend, & probably a better singer, too. Mind you, he was pretty damned good, though...so that really IS a compliment to you both.
Congratulations to sheltered & Kathleen, too...& all the other writers who came to partake of the wine. Thanks to Nic & Chez for hosting an amazing & inspiring contest. Be well, Poets & Scribes.

I love you both.

There is some necessary hardware missing –
The lock to keep intruders out stopped working
years ago when I lost the key
down an abandoned well in Idaho.
There are splintered craters dispersed here & there
They menace the mind with thoughts of slivers
Embedded deeply into soft flesh
Infected by lead paint
& not enough maintenance.

Love your take on the door-theme

Was trying to do it Brautigan style lol
