    THE WIDOW JONES

Widow Jones sat rocking in her porch chair.
Behind her, high in the black sky, tornadoes
revved their pent-up anger, snorting smoke,
barreling towards the houses on Elm.
But the widow, confused in her old age,
thought hiding in the basement a pointless
    venture, preferred instead total relaxation,
a daring lack of movement, a challenging
of the elements that would be used against her.
The big funnel would either move on or rest here,
she told the neighbors as they raced for shelter.
It too will pass, says the widow, then shuts
her eyes to block out the roar of the enemy.
