COLUMN: Poems For Reading Out Loud

Next month I shall be reciting some maritime poetry at a meeting in a Maritime Museum. I shall choose half-a-dozen poems in order to fill about 25 minutes of time. I wonder what poems would you choose if you had to undertake a similar task?

A. Maritime
B. Nature
C. War
D. Transport
E. Education
F. Doll / Toy

For this competition I want you to choose half-a-dozen poems on one of the above themes (NOT one each) that you would use if you were to give a similar performance to a group (all ages) in a museum.

I would also like to know why you have chosen those particular poems and how they fit together into your session.

The poems MUST qualify for inclusion on Allpoetry's sister web-site Oldpoetry. If they are already there please add a link to them on Oldpoetry, if they are not there give a link and / or the words and source.

RULES

A: Correct spelling and punctuation is required as is good grammar.

B: All poems cited must have been written prior to 1950 and be eligible for inclusion on the Oldpoetry web site.

C: Poems cannot be all from the same writer. You must refer to 3 or more different writers.

D: There must be exactly 6 poems and the overall time required for reading them aloud (at an appropriate pace) must be at least 15 minutes (to allow time for linking chat).

E: The competition will be extended twice so that it will close at the end of September.

REMINDER
This is not a competition for your own poetry but it is about what you think of other people's poetry and how you would combine them.
Please ignore the web-sites automatic references to pre-writes and other poetic points!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on October 7, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 750, Silver: 300, Bronze: 150, Honorable mention: 3 people
  • Final notes:
This was one of the hardest contests to judge even though there were only a few entries, since each entry had a multiplicity of poems to be found and read.
As I-Like-Rhymes I have commented on each of the entries and at greater length and have summmarised my thoughts on the finalists.

To those people who wonder what poems I chose for the real talk check out Gordon The Gopher's offering since that was the one I wrote . Naturally I refrained from letting him win

It only remains to say that each of the columns could have been used as an entertainment in a museum without embarassing the performer and each of the entries provided me with some great reading.

This is definitely a very original contest. It will require some research, but you are giving time enough for it; I will certainly try to find six poems that fit to one of the themes.

Plenty of time I hope. I didn't want to make the themes too easy.
You might try a category search

I'm sure there is an abundance of poems that fit some of those like nature, but the challenge might be in finding poems that fit the transport category. Ah, I do remember one...if I can remember the title.

Should be fun, and good luck with your reading...but better you than me, public speaking is scary!

Masefield's Cargoes and Betjeman's Night Mail spring to my mind
I wonder which you might come up with

I have two poems in mind straight away but will have to look for the others. I wish you well with the reading aloud. Its scary but also extremely rewarding once you get the nerves under control.

    Fine Idea

Why do I get the feeling you are going to enjoy this contest immensely Jim?
I hope you have a great time and if I have time I'll look in to see how the entries are gathering.
Fine idea for a challenge for AP Members and yourself.

It's a spur to get me learning my own selection securely plus I thought it might be nice to see what others would do. Perhaps we can get some columns to spotlight on OP out of the entries. I know Gordon the Gopher is writing one

        The entry form

is a bit confusing. It says enter a new poem, prewrites are not allowed. Rules say poems must have been written prior to 1950.How can I enter a new poem that was written prior to 1950?
Another Question:- Do you require the whole poem to be typed in or just the name, author and why I have selected each one?My chosen ones are all old old poems and are probably already on Old Poetry.

The entry form is confusing because Kevin (site boss) has not come to terms with competitions seeking columns instead of poems.

I am not asking people to write poems but to choose poems someone else has written and combine them. So a competitor's own poems, pre written or not, are actually immaterial for this competition!

If the selected poems are already on OP then a simple link is enough. If they are not on Oldpoetry but elsewhere on the WWW then a link will do for those as well. If they are not on the net but in a hardcopy book somewhere then the only way I will be able to judge (unless I also have the book) will be if the poem is typed in and they will have to be cited (name, author, book etc).

I am halfway through writing a column that I will use as an example.

BTW any poems chosen by you that are not yet on Oldpoetry will be added by me if they are eligible.

I am still mulling things over, deciding what to include. Glad you extended it !

This is more complicated than most contests but,if I have time in the next 4 days, I may get back to it. May consult a book called 101 Poets about the War, edited by Andrew Motion. There are some excellent selections there and, of course, I would make sure that all of them are also in Oldpoetry.

    Great idea for a contest.

I am sorry I didn't read this message until today and the deadline was passed! I had intended to close on the 30th September but personal circumstances kept me away for a few days. It may be too late now but I would still be interested in having a look-see if you do do a column like these.
