Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on September 4, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 1000, Silver: 500, Bronze: 250, Honorable mention: 5 people
- Final notes: Because haiku are of variable form, without meter, rhyme or rhythm, only the message and its presentation is left to judge in each. In fairness to those who are not Gold members or did not provide pictures, visual images were disregarded as the contest asked for haiku only.
Many entries read as continual lines broken into three. This is not haiku.
To judge over 80 individual haiku, each of which had a worthy message and individual merit, became for the judges, very much a matter of personal preference.
Among those singled out as preferred were:
Tortoise haiku and grasshopper haiku of Jaime Coudre; Garden Art of Aesthete2000; haiku 2 and haiku 4 of Masterblaster; 5 and 6 of Haiku – Nature by LindaBurns; Haiku 1 & 2 by MrgaretG and Creating Rainbows by Maureen. Others were very close to these.
As the judges did not reach unanimity, the king has exercised ‘royal privilege’ and has decided the awards on a basis of the evident effort made to support his contest combined with the worthiness of the haiku messages:
GOLD: Aesthete2000 (18 haiku entered) 1000 points
SILVER: Jaime Coudre (9 haiku entered) 500 “
BRONZE: Linda Burns (8 haiku entered) 250 “
Honourable Mentions 50 points each to:
Masterblaster; MargaretG; Angelica, Poetryality, Maureen.
Thankyou all for supporting this contest in which we hope you had fun and enjoyment..
Sincerely, Hugh (R.)

Hi, please forgivr me if I am wrong, I thought a Haiku must be about nature??
-
-
Dear Di,
Traditional haiku were about nature, seasons, a moment and consisted of 17 syllables or less, usually divided into three lines of 5/7/5.
The modern western equivalent can cover almost any topic and may have lines of varying lengths although usually not exceeding a total of 17 syllables.
That is my understanding. Please, somebody, correct me if I am wrong? -
-
You quite right dad, however haiku using a different topic than nature isn't really a western thing. Basho wrote haiku that didn't have nature as subject, not mainly anyway. Here one of Basho's haiku:
Sick on my journey
only my dreams will wander
these desolate moors
