because we find the personal in the universal

I just finished reading a wonderful book and, realizing how many wonderful books I have read, I wanted to share the love

Basically, I will list some novels that I have read and think are truly impressive, which have really made a difference to me. I would like you to write a free-verse poem, no rhyming or breathtaking rhyming, around 20 lines, inspired by one of them. Take the story, an element, the settings, a character's personality, a quote... something, out of it. And make it personal.

The list of books:

"Torture the artist" by Joey Goebel

"A Long Way Down" by Nick Hornby (no emo stuff, please)

"The girl who played go" by Shan Sa (bonus points for this one because I doubt many will do it)

"The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk-Kidd

"The Long Walk" by Stephen King

"P.S I love you" by Cecilia Ahem (the *book*, not the movie. And do NOT enter mushy cliche stuff - if you enter this option it'd better be good.)

"The Ice Queen" by Alice Hoffman

"11 minutes" by Paulo Coelho

If you haven't read these books, I suggest you do, because each one of them has something special. However, if you have not and want to enter, send me an IM and I will send you a poem that I consider as extraordinary as the above books, to be inspired by, but for this option make sure not to simply re-write the given poem.

You can enter more than once, but no more than once per book and one poem, please.

Be inspired

Haha, well, I'm sure it'll be worth the trip to the library (if our tastes in books match). If you want, you can still do the poem option, anyway. Or I can extend the deadline if I don't get many entries or if someone needs time

The GF read "My sister's keeper". Isn't it about a girl that's dying and her sister donates her kidney or something?

Not really my type of thing. I hardly ever read fiction, and when I do I like to be entertained, as in comedy or fantasy.

No way, Its about a girl who has a rare form of leukeamie and her parents make another daughter that will be the exact match for donations such as bone marrow. but when that daughter is old enough to understand the process and the actual reason she was born she sues her parents to the right to her own body. It goes through but the end plot is amazing, it made me cry and I would type it but then I would give away the book. but its not what you think.

I was close enough Yeah make sure you don't spoil it other's will want to read it. But again, not to mock you or the book, it's just not my thing. (Last fictional book I read was American Psycho).

I've just read the synopsis. It seems to be pretty much about what you say, but I haven't read it yet, either. Well, to each their own; I find that theme rather interesting because I like reading books that make me think of things.

Mmmm, A Long Way Down - it is so profound. The Bell Jar is so breathtaking too. XD

I will have to invest some time into the others I suppose.

I will have to try to come up with something from one of the two books I've read. Amazing contest idea! You've certainly stimulated my muse. =)

P.S. How have you been? We haven't talked in a while.
