Hello Fine Poets and Friends...
Once again, I come to you with hopes you will share your innermost thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and ideas with me and someone I'm very close to. The subject...is sex, (I prefer "making love"
) the first time in particular...
PLEASE read carefully!
What you need to know:
* She's 15, and I love her to pieces...and then some...
* She's making some tough life decisions right now, primarily...whether or not to lose her virginity to her boyfriend, whom she's been dating for 6 months.
*He is not "pressuring" her.
*She is intelligent, beautiful, responsible, and has been raised in a very loving family with strong morals and a Christian background.
* From the outside, most would say she "has it all"...but that doesn't mean she doesn't struggle with the same teenage issues as others.
What I'd like from you, in poetic format OR prose...
* If she were YOUR daughter...sister...future girlfriend...or best friend...what would you say to her? What advice would you give her? How does/did it change your life? Do you have regrets? Is there anything you wish you'd known then, that you know now?
* Please note, even though I wish she would wait...I am not looking only for a "just don't do it" point of view. Feel free to share your experiences, thoughts, and feelings...whatever they are, as long as they are honest, and from the heart. No guilt trips, please. I simply want her to see this from as many sides as possible, to have the most information possible to make the choice that is right for her. Whenever this happens, be it now or further into the future, I'd like it to be a good, and beautiful, experience for her.
* A guy's point of view is especially appreciated, no matter what your age.
RULES and other good things to know
* Please note your age (or approximate age, teens, 20's, 30's, etc) in author notes, as well as if you are male or female.
* Be prepared to get honest reviews of your work.
* NO erotica
* I will DQ entries that are offensive in any way, ie: bashing, cutting, erotica, etc.
*Grammar and spelling DO count.
* All other standard rules apply.
* She will be reading all entries and possibly commenting. I'll be taking her opinions into consideration when picking my winners.
*Points may go up, depending on number and quality of entries.
*I am not allowing prewrites at this time...at least not without prior approval. Please IM me or leave a message on the contest page if you have something you want me to consider.
* IF I do later on allow prewrites, you'll be allowed 2 entries each, only ONE of which can be a prewrite...so there's no excuse to not write a fresh poem now.
*Number of HM's will be determined at contest end.
That's it...Have fun and good luck to all!

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on September 7, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 6 people
- Final notes: Firstly, I want to thank all of you for sharing your experiences, wisdom, and views on such a personal and complex subject. I feel like I learn something from every contest I hold, usually about poetry itself, and always about life...but I learned more than I even expected in this contest. Whether or not your poem or story makes a difference in the decisions my niece makes, there are insights and advice that give her ~ or any teen ~ plenty to think about, from nearly every perspective imaginable...and that's exactly what I wanted for her, so I thank you all for that too. : )
I had a difficult time picking winners, so increased the number of HMs beyond the 3 I generally give. My top 3 picks are each amazing in their own way and I hope you'll take the time to read them if you haven't already. Some writes I chose for their poetic beauty, others for the personal effect it had on either me or my niece, but I think the top 3 especially are just well-rounded in both regards and have a lot of impact. Any one of them could have easily ended up with the gold, they are all that deserving. HMs are in no particular order, also all well worth reading...though I truly feel like EVERY poem or story in this contest had something good to offer and say, and I'd have liked to give out even more HMs.
My thanks also to those of you who commented on other writes in the contest. I'm sure the poets appreciated it, and I know I did too, as it's always wonderful to see good sportsmanship and encouragement between poets.
That's it, until next time! : )
I wish each of you, all the best in your writing endeavors...
~J.

This is a very good topic for a contest, trista. I hope you get good, quality entries. I'm 70 (will be 71 later this month) years old and probably way too old fashioned but I think I'll try to write something meaningful for the contest.

Hi Dee,

I don't think age matters a bit with this subject. My parents are both in their 80's and I'm often surprised when they talk about how things "really" were when they were young. As my dad says...there's a reason girls so often got married at a young age.
I'd LOVE to see an entry from you!

Awww...Hi Hon

I don't think this is a matter of "reaching out" even...I simply love her and want her to make good decisions for herself.
Would love to see an entry from you, btw.

Hi Rick,
I agree, it's a complex subject for sure! As for the "difficult to put in poetic form" that's why I'm more than happy to have prose entries as well.
Thanks so much for stopping by...I'll look forward to seeing an entry from you. I know you have a lot of wisdom when it comes to women, so I've no doubt you'll come up with something.
Love and

Oh, wow. This is such an amazing idea for a contest! My own experiences in the matter are somewhat... well, mixed? Being a victim of abuse, my "first time" was what I decided to make of it, so it might be a little different from what you are looking form.
However, I'll try to get something written for this before the deadline.
It'll more than likely be in prose, because, let's face it, I've tried to write poems about this and failed miserably.

Yay for you, for making your "first time" what you decided to make it!
I think there's actually a great lesson and a good deal of wisdom in that.
I'd love to see an entry from you, and yes...prose is just as good as poetry for this one. I'll look forward to your entry!
