Hello to all! I haven’t hosted a contest for a while, but I’m excited to do it again! The purpose of this contest is as follows:
I will list a bunch of words – the words will be in Danish, and I will not give you the meaning of them. Your job will be to make up a definition that you think suits the word, and then use that definition as your prompt. For example, if you were given the word ‘Mand’ and you find that it sounds and looks like something to do with fruit, you will then write your definition in your author notes (i.e. Mand = something to do with fruit) and then use that definition (something to do with fruit) as your prompt for the poem. In that way, lots of poetry will be written with different prompts.
After judging I will give you the true definition of the words – you will not win a trophy if you got the definition right. You will win based on the quality of your poem combined with the accuracy of your guess. However, the definition part is mostly just for fun
The words are (I have avoided words with letters unknown to you, and words inspired or adopted by the English language):
Ord
Kvinde
Digt
Lyd
Skygge
Billede
Samleje
Stilhed
Sandhed
Bryst
Tom
Bryllup
Ondskab
Falsk
Lilje
Please do not look up the words. The point is to see whether a word which meaning is unknown can mean the same to a group of people because of its spelling or whatever. Therefore, you shouldn’t read other people’s poetry to see their definitions (at least not until you’ve made one for yourself).
***Update - please do not use the word in your poem! There's no need for mixing up languages.
I will not give you many rules, but I will give you hints: I’m not a fan of chat speak or dirty pretty. Other than that, the usual rules apply and it’s always nice to comment on each others poetry. You can enter as many times as you want, though only once per word.
So that’s about it! I will try to comment on all entries, but I will not applaud any! More points will be added if the quality of work demands it.
Have fun!

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on August 14, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes: Hello to all! I want to thank everybody who entered this contest, as I realise it must have been quite a difficult one. However, I truly enjoyed your guesses, and some of them impressed me – and others made me laugh! Here are the true meaning of the words you used:
Digt = Poem
Billede = Picture
Falsk = False
Lyd = Sound
Samleje = sexual intercourse
Lilje = Lily
Kvinde = Woman
Stilhed = Stillness
I think only the people using the word “Falsk” actually guessed the true meaning. However, I applaud you all for your creativity and talent!
I’m low on points, so only the gold trophy is getting some. But, the top three poems really impressed me, so I hope you can all settle for a shiny trophy!
Thanks to all for entering, and making this a fun contest!
