It will be nice to see something from you, Lynda. I don't think they know who it is but one of the photos called it a "woman's face" - to me, it could go either way. That looks sort of like a helmet to me.
-
-
I agree with you...I thought it was a helmet of some sort and the face looks masculine....Perhaps it is all in the perception ....I have to try lol...I just broke out of a case of writer's block and was looking for new inspiration
TY!! Be back

I have to say he is better looking in this one and looks healthier. Sorry if that sounds frivolous. Poor old Vincent. I'm not sure if I could handle this prompt.

This is not a self-portrait
it's an unknown portrait by Van Gogh, but an exciting find! I am thrilled by this discovery. It gives me goosebumps - the patch of grass was an actual field in Paris.

Fascinating
I knew he often painted his works over old ones with which he reamined unsatisfied, but it is great to learn that we can now look at the lost works. Al though, it seems a bit like looking at the first, rough draft of a poem - maybe a little unkind! It does show his progression as an artist, though - I would date the idea for this portrait from the time he worked with miners in Borinage as an evangilist,
and the execution of it to around 1882 when he painted this picture of A Woman on a Beach - I note the similar palette of colours, and his obvious dis-satisfaction with his treatment of the face. Note the similar helmet-shaped hat.

wow, thank you for that.
yes, I feel it's a little like a sonogram of an unborn baby or something. But if you think he only painted over it because he was too poor to purchase more canvas, it's cool that we can see it. I like the way it's framed in the field. Like it has been excavated at an archeological dig. This process they are using is so cool that it doesn't even disturb the layers.

wow!
seriously awesome!
this is definitely exciting news. thanks for spreading word through a contest.
i'm not sure if i'll be able to think of something. will see.
even i thought it was a self-portrait. the features look masculine.
i really wonder what his ghost (if it's still around unless he's reincarnated again, lol) would be thinking after hearing about this. would he be aghast that they discovered an old work of his after 2 centuries?

wish he was here for an interview.

Three days left on this; hope to see something from you...

I am very proud to have received the Gold here. Vincent's works have always meant a lot to me: never to have sold such masterpieces in his lifetime must have been harsh indeed. Thank you.
-
thank you so much for the points and the silver
Congrats to all and thanks for the inspiration!!
