Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on August 11, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 1000, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100
  • Final notes:
Sigh. Next time I try to host a contest for the Great Buk, please someone slap me back into some sense! I guess the old adage of 'be careful of what you wish for because you just might get it' throbbed through me when I was reading through the entries. I have yet to judge a more difficult contest, and aside from my Sexton emulation contest, this was my absolute favorite. This was due to the enormous caliber of poems presented here, and I daresay, I would've just put everyone in the finalist list...and would have, except my old ass labtop kept freezing up everytime I hit the 'add' button. lol So that is why I stopped and just wanted everyone to know that I loved almost every single entry as dearly as I would my first-born.

As it stood, I have TWO lists of winners, and will be opening another contest for the second sets of winners only so they can receive their pts and trophies. These six winners were just phenomenal and each brought not only buk's fabulous voice, but also something else of themselves and they all presented an aspect of buk that I found both endearing and awe-filled. They are without a doubt some of the best emulations of not only this man, but also works of art in their own right.

    GOLD

    - A little bit of filth - this had everything I have found buk to be...raw, sexy, gritty and an ending that punched like a hammer taffy.

    - Little Poems - the only one that had a feminine bent to buk's outrageous maleness...this is buk in a dress and high stiletto heels.

    SILVER

    - Darling little poem - loved this, not only for its amazing vocal imagery, but because the ending was rather stunning in its conclusion. A must read.

    - Back in the Ugly - Buk if he used a paintbrush and slapped together another masterpiece filled with wit and longing.

    BRONZE

    - Writing poems in bars - Classic buk, filled with his clever little lines and exquisite wisdom.

    - absurdity and titles - the ending was absolutely jaw-dropping. It filled me with such joy because of all the works, here was buk, naked and skinned to perfection.

As I said, everyone deserved to be in the finalists list and I apologize profusely for my slow-ass computer. lol I really was just overwhelmed by the quality and sheer brilliance of all the entries and I cannot begin to state how delighted I was with the results of this contest.

I can only say thank you...from the bottom of my heart for your offerings and will just say this: You ALL did him justice.

Now, I need to go get that vodka...

    CHEERS!

Gurl...you're gonna love him! He's got such a straight from the hip gritty and in your face pieces. lol I think you'll benefit richly from his posey, his deliberate use of words like a sledgehammer to others who only live in the flowers of poetry.

And after you read, go enter a poem that will WOWSERLIZE me!

How many entries are we allowed to make? I happen to have one poem in his style (how he might have handled a famous nursery rhyme) and one dedicated to him.

I just got home after being away for a month, and what a hoot to see my name in your contest!

Ya know, I was just in the Toronto airport, and the man sitting across from me in the departure gate was reading Bukowski. The oddest thing.

I have a friend who might like to enter this contest.

      WELCOME BACK!!

Yeah, I've been meaning to do this contest awhile back ago and the only thing I could think of was that little quote you had on your page a long time ago...lol. So thank you for the inspiration and anything from you or associated with you will be most appreciated.

    I can't.

Well, I've been trying to come up with something and The odd thing is that I like Bukowski's stuff but I can't write to it.
    I can't even pretend.
I think that in order to emulate his poems one has to be at least a little bit like him....I'm about as far away from who he is as I can get.
Oh well, I'll just sit in the loge seats and watch this time..

Aww...c'mon, paul...you can do it. Hell, I'm nothing like him in real life and do you know how hard it is for a FEMALE to emulate that drunk bastard?? lol But there is an almost tangible quality about his work, the REAL stuff so to speak, so if you have any instances in your life that kiinda reflect that, use that to catapult you and then enter so I can read it too!

        Well...ok....since you asked so nicely.
By the way, my favorite Buk poem is the one I think is called "I have a blue bird inside" I think it's about as close to a, dare I say, love poem as one would ever witness. lol
In it the old curmudgeon hints to us that he's well aware that his very crankiness is one crucial element in his success.

My absolute favourite buk-shot is " One Tough Motherfucker" For me it says everything about the man who couldn't get others to understand that his ultimate trophy was saving the life of a severely injured stray cat. I have a prewrite which I hope doesn't make you ache upon reading, if it does, bite me, bite me, but please don't bruise and then make mine a double!

Oh my Goddess...that's my favorite too! I just love that piece to pieces because it showed all the genius quality of his work but at the same time so human and humane...and I'm a sucker for run-over cats too. It shows such compassion and like you said, was what he REALLY wanted to show the world...that here was the ultimate survivor and that's who he really wanted to be. I would give an eyeteeth to have a photo of him with that cat.

I'm sure I'll love whatever you enter...I always do.

I've never understood the process of two sets of trophies. What does it mean exactly?- Are both golds better than both silvers? Is the first set listed 1,2,3- ? or is it 1,1, 2,2,3,3?

so is one and one better than two and two..

    ?

I've always wanted to ask this question.

Quite honestly, I dunno...lol I mean, I can't speak of anyone else, but the reason why I chose to hold two sets of trophies was because the pieces that hit me the hardest were so different in aspects and so I wanted to honor them in another way. Really for a second there, I was toying with having THREE sets of winners! This was vastly hard to judge and so I decided why not? I don't know if this explains why and wherefores, but I simply just wanted to do it this way.

Thank you so much for honoring me by entering. I really did love your piece.

no.. i get that you found 6 pieces that you wanted to honor-

what my question is - is do you consider both golds better than both silvers? both silvers better than both bronzes?

are the two golds the top two?

I'm not trying to be difficult- it's just a question i have always wondered about in these situations but have been a recipient of so felt it was sorta sleazy to asks.. but this time since i wasn't a contender

        i can ask...

which were your top two? the top two golds?

    Thanks Darcy & Buk!

    Wow.

Thanks so much, Darcy. What a fun way to start a miserable, rainy Monday work day. Thanks for a place to be inspired and let loose.

A Mr. Bukowski Poem with gratitude:

To The Whore Who Took My Poems by Charles Bukowski

some say we should keep personal remorse from the
    poem,
stay abstract, and there is some reason in this,
    but jezus;
twelve poems gone and I don't keep carbons and you have
    my
paintings too, my best ones; its stifling:
are you trying to crush me out like the rest of them?
why didn't you take my money? they usually do
from the sleeping drunken pants sick in the corner.
next time take my left arm or a fifty
    but not my poems:
    I'm not Shakespeare
    but sometime simply
    there won't be any more, abstract or otherwise;
there'll always be mony and whores and drunkards
    down to the last bomb,
    but as God said,
    crossing his legs,
I see where I have made plenty of poets
    but not so very much
    poetry.

    Lisa

You are so welcome, Miz Lisa! Really I adored your piece...it blended not only buk, but a smattering of Sexton at that ending. But overall, it held your own genius and I was really delighted with the results. Thank you so much for doing me the honor of entering.
