for much wisdom comes much
sorrow
the more knowledge, the more
grief.
Ecclesiastes chapter one, verse 18
That, in my experience, is the most valuable book of the bible in terms of a real substance, beyond the benefits that have always served humanity in terms of religion. (whether you're hindu, muslim, zoroastrian, wiccan, christian, greek/norse/egyptian pantheon; it's all serving the goal of giving purpose to life, trying to fill that void with some meaning.)
scientists say the human race has been rockin for a million years, and only in the last few thousand started to civilize- not an easy thing when you're sustenance living, always fighting for one more day of existence.
but then, most people prefer the paper bag route...
truth could be a half shimmering in the pond, a broken lightbulb, or a mountain that people choose to cover up and paint a differant color etcetera etcetera etcetera to the point where you have a stutter saying it so many times.
obviously, wisdom is a subjective thing, it's relative, like most things. Everybody has different thoughts on it. are you leaning with Sartre, or ghandi? marcus aurelius, or moses?
you could say wisdom is something to be found in the conventions of your culture. but let's be honest, a pastor feels important in the midwest, but in afghanistan he's just awkward and out of place. who's to say who's right?
You could say that wisdom is found in the man who works hard, enjoys his food and his family, who sleeps well, the man who forges his life of toil and small triumphs without going mad. a simple life.
you could say that wisdom is an accurate notion of life, a deeper awareness of reality.
You could say it’s what a father tells his kid; his life distilled into a few words of advice.
or you got J-dawg's triple wise guys. Doz gangsta’s got gould! And smelly shit too.
So which breed do you approve of? do you consider yourself among the ranks? does it matter?
this contest is all about wisdom, that of others and perhaps your own brand.
whether you want to pour some wine for bukowski, light up with baudelaire, or fold some hands with Augustine, I want to hear your opinion.
unfortunately though, as JK Huysman states so well in his novel, Against Nature, no matter how elastic one tries to be, appreciating the art and style above the content, one unavoidably has personal tendencies, and can't be asked to forsake entirely their desires and prejudices.(paraphrasing)
and so it is that I much prefer the universal truth. If you want to blab on about how your sect, your country, your race, your geography that promotes a certain idea as THE ONE, than whatever, but I'm looking for reality, not a little mind and a regurgitated acceptance of the mass O.K.
(not rules, but guidelines)
whatever helps you get by is fine, but in this I'm looking for people who aren't afraid of themselves, of the world; people who aren’t afraid to ask, who are open enough to register what they find without distorting it to fit something else.
if you hate bukowski,
or entire groups of people,
if you believe in censorship,
if you've never been drunk
if you don't think it's funny, that, in my last appearance in church I wrote an erotic sonnet on the bulletin,
or if you’ve never given serious thought to existence
if you don’t masturbate
than this shit ain't for you.
So move along, cupcake.
I've been a prick in the past, but I've realized that poetry is just like any other activity, some people are naturally amazing, but you can't ask that of most people, as they only do what they can: for fun, release, whatever.
so, no cruelty, just tasteful criticism.
