Welcome to Poets Survivor 3—Round Five. This contest is for the following TOP FOUR poets:
Peteskid
Mallig
Everwind Rising
Chugglepuff
As you know, this round should be a bit tougher than the last. Whoever becomes the ultimate Poet Survivor will be a poet who excels in many different poetic arenas. Round Five, then, will require you to write in a prescribed poetic FORM. And the form we have selected is…
the Villanelle.
The villanelle is a 19-line fixed form poem with repeating lines, composed of five tercets with a closing quatrain that ends in a rhyming couplet.
The rhyme pattern is aba-aba-aba-aba-aba-abaa.
The measure/beat is either Iambic trimeter, tetrameter, or pentameter; your choice, but be consistent throughout.
The commanding couplet of the villanelle (lines 1 and 3) make repeating refrains in the poem as follows:
1*3, **1, **3, **1, **3, **13 (stars are non-repeating lines)
The villanelle is perfect for relaying a story and generally does so in three parts. The first tercet provides the beginning element; tercets two through four develops the idea of the first; and the final quatrain brings resolution or conclusion to the story. As the story progresses, the impact and intensity should build throughout.
Below you will find a link thoroughly describing the villanelle, as well as how to construct one. If you are not already familiar, you will learn how to properly build a villanelle from start to finish.

Even if you are familiar with the form, it is important that both the contestants AND the judges study the information at this link diligently to better prepare you to write for or judge this challenge.
Challenging, right??? But definitely not overly difficult for such talented writers.
So… to keep it more interesting, there is a SECOND challenge to this round.
You will also be responsible for writing a free verse poem. You guys are all free verse champs, so we can’t let you just skim on by, right? Right!
The catch is this: Your free verse poem must tell the SAME STORY as your villanelle. It cannot have regular end rhyme, nor repeated refrains as in the villanelle. Also, you may not use the same lines and phrases. OBVIOUSLY you will borrow many of the same words and ideas/theme, etc., but this poem will look and feel completely different than the villanelle. It will flow like spoken language with a wonderful natural rhythm and the lyrical quality that marks excellent free verse.
To that end, we ask that you include INTERNAL RHYMING, assonance and consonance. When you use these devices, be sure that they add something to the poem, are not overstated, or included just for the device’s sake. Also, include IMAGERY that is beneficial to your theme.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on August 25, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 600, Silver: 250, Bronze: 150, Honorable mention: 1 people
- Final notes: Wow! It's finally here--the results of the Villanelle Semi-final Round.
First, please accept my deepest apologies for the extreme delay. It is not the way I like to do things, but to be fair to all contestants and judges, waiting seemed the only fair way to go.
I think you will all find the results of this and the free verse semi-final round surprising on several fronts. The results of both, and the final results will be posted very soon.
For THIS round, we had a tie between Mallig and chugglepuff. Both scored 90 points from the two middle judges, so I deferred to the untallied judges' scores to break the tie for Gold. Still it was close, but chugglepuff is our winner! Congratulations Byrony; your villanelle was exceptional!
Everyone else did a beautiful job as well. I know I personally found wonderful merit in each of them. You will be interested to compare the villanelle scores and rankings to the freeverse rankings. I encourage you to do so when they are all posted.
Thank you all for superb entries, and again for you amazing patience.
