Exactly what the title implies. If you're looking for monosyllabic comments or the sugarcoated 'that was good', then this is not the contest for you.
Give me something:
-gritty
-dark
-that sticks like a knife in the gut
Rules:
-no bashing me or each other
-keep it under 20 lines [though I will make exceptions for amazing poems]
- spell-check, please
-no wrist-slashing emo garbage
-no glorifying self-harm, rape, or abuse of anyone/anything
-no dirty-pretty... spare my eyes!
I reserve the right to DQ anything that sucks, without warning, as well as to close this contest, should it suck. Points/HMs will be added, depending on the quality of the entries... I'm at no shortage for points, and I will drop all 30, 000 on one person if your entry is worth it.
Most importantly:
NO WHINING OR HARRASSING ME IF I LEAVE YOU AN HONEST CRITIQUE, OR YOU WILL BE BANNED FROM ANY OF MY FUTURE CONTESTS. REMEMBER, COMMENTS ARE SUBJECTIVE... THEY ARE SIMPLY OPINIONS, SO DO NOT BASH THEM. POOR SPORTSMANSHIP WILL NOT BE TOLERATED HERE!
To those of you who think yourselves up to the challenge, get ready. The picture at the top ["So I Won't Be Lost Again" by Princess of Shadows] is there as a guide, though if you need a prompt, please just ask.
Good luck, lovelies ♥
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on August 1
- Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 50, Bronze: 50, Honorable mention: 2 people
- Final notes: Well, this was disappointing. The winners were easy to pick, because they were the few that didn't bore me after 2 seconds. They are what kept me from closing this contest completely.
The 2 HMs were added since the poems were very good, yet I gave them horrid critiques because I was bitchy and tired after reading some of the other crap that turned my brain to mush.
Until next time,
Laura, aka Immortal

Did you mean to include pre-writes?
-
-
Indeed, I did! I don't believe that an on-demand piece is a viable representation of someone's talent, so go ahead... As long as it doesn't break any rules
-
-
i eagerly await your criticism. don't hold back. i need it... i'm about to submit it to a literary journal and need all the criticism i can get. ta.
-
-
I will go through yours with a fine-toothed comb
Judging is blind, though, so just put your name in the author-notes and I'll know to be extra-hard on you
Oh, and mine was the entry in your contest that you said looked like had used a thesaurus for everything
Truth be told, I wrote it in about 10 minutes for a quickie and thought it was a piece of crap
But thanks for the awesome critique... I only give the kind I'd kill for more of
-
-
Wow, ten minutes? I can only get a short stanza done in ten minutes; I compulsively edit EVERYTHING and my English sucks.

My piece is called "Hollowed." Ta! -
-
Yep... Got lucky there
The prompt was a good one, and it just sent the muse flying! I could do with more of that
I just happen to love big words, and anything to do with them, hence being a poet/novelist
Sorry for the overkill, though... It's still my favourite, though I have a few of those now. I used to hate everything I wrote... Heh!
-
-
Same here - big words are awesome, but I prefer shorter but obscure ones, like oread. I collect synonyms.

Ooh, have you written any novels yet? -
-
PS: I just realised my contest entry is 40-something lines over the word limit.
Do you want me to remove it?
-
-
Hmmm... I'd prefer if you entered something shorter, especially since I'm so A.D... Ooh, look! A shiny pebble!
Anyway, if you want to, it's up to you. I'll still critique it if you remove it...
Oh, and short, obscure words are fun too, but the big ones are fun too! -
-
Since you just sent out a message asking for around 20 lines, let me find you a shorter one. I'd still like a "ripping a new arsehole" critique on "Hollowed," if you're up it.
That's awesome about the novels. I have 3 in the works, but I'm really friggin' lazy, haha. -
-
Like I said, yours is fine, since at least you bothered asking if it was okay. Have you seen some of these line-counts? Seriously, I don't want to make people put stupid things in the ANs to show they at least haphazardly read the rules, but if that's what it takes, then I will...
Say, you want to co-judge the next contest with me? I could use another pair of hands for wringing people's necks!
And good on you for the novels... I've hit the worst writer's block and can't snap out of it for the life of me! -
-
okay, i'll put it back in.
i understand about the line counts; 99% of stuff on this site is shitty drivel, and more than 20 lines? you're most likely condemning your brain a type of spanish inquisition. (NO ONE expects the spanish inquisition!!)
definitely! i'd love to co-judge!
and i'll have no excuses for writer's block come this fall. i'm taking three writing classes, one in which we get to write coming-of-age novels. i'm thrilled ^^ -
-
Agreed on the shitty drivel! Hence this contest, for it is intended to discourage said crap... I usually don't mind if a poem is over 20 lines, but that's about the point where I stop paying attention

That's great to hear about your writing class! Where do you go to school? My uni. doesn't offer anything like that until 3rd/4th year, and I am sooooooo jealous!

Actually, I have two on the go right now... One is undergoing its fourth edit, and the other was a NaNoWriMo winner that will be expanded upon eventually

"...as well as to close this contest, should it suck."
i can't even tell you how much that line amused me. now i have to enter. -
I apologize for not realizing my poem didn't meet the criteria. I have removed it and submitted a piece that does
-
-
Thank you
Like I already told another contestant, I was just annoyed because half of the entries didn't follow the rules... That, to me, shows a lack of respect for both the contest and its creator. Plus, I'm painfully A.D.D., so I generally stop paying attention at around 15-20 lines. Nothing personal, though... I just can't pay attention to longer pieces, no matter how good they are. I'm glad to see you've re-entered
-
-
crap. I missed it again...
...it would also help in my muse wasn't six feet under
-
thanks for the honest comment & trophy, and congrats to the other winners!
-
You probably would have liked Disarticulation better. Sorry you were so disappointed by the general level of entries.
(FWIW, I write this kind of crap... not exclusively, but close to it. If you're ever in the mood to bury yourself in gore, there's a little nexus of it around me.)
-
-
Nothing quite like a good gore-fest! I look forward to reading it
