Free-Write

(photograph by Pieter Hugo, Lagos http://www.pieterhugo.com/ *Warning! Be prepared when clicking on Hugo's links, as the photographs are all explicit, real life, with some showing horrific death)

This contest is open in terms of form & content; the image is there because I've just found out about Pieter Hugo's work, and it blows me away

so go with the flow; it would be great if you feel like using the image(s) or ideas behind it, just don't feel restricted

no pre-writes, yet multiple writes are v.welcome

I'm not writing much, lately, but I will bookmark this and see if anything hits me.

Great photo. I'm on my way to his site, now.

cool---I'll adjust the deadline in a mo', and have it open for a month, just in case

I know: the photograph's great! I bought Tony Allen's new double 12" a couple of days ago, and The Hyena Man is on the cover

I saw the image a few months ago in a Sunday Supplement as well, so it looks like Hugo's being recognised right now in a big way...as in, he's getting exhibitions in America & being hailed all over the International Art Movement

The South African portraits were shocking. And, of course, Rwanda. Amazing stuff.

I'm yet to brace myself to look at those properly---I had to look away

          I will, though.

what gets me is, in wildlife doc's, the hyenas appear small compared to the lions

yet, hyenas are really huge in comparison with a man---imagine how big the lions are compared to a man!

our zoos must have smaller specimens of everything in the wild, I think, because I've never been struck by the size of any lions I've seen there...and I've never actually seen a real hyena

The Hyena Men are melting my brain---what life experiences produce them? to make them capable of surviving like that?

when I look at the portraits, I think about Human Rights, not Animal Rights, for these men are using whatever they can to survive at base level, and I think they're entitled

to live as we see fit (no more, no less)

Didn't manage to make your last contest so I'll try and do one for this contest before I leave on holiday. Hope the beats are going good

Thankyou very much indeed for the Gold and Congratulations to Silver and Bronze!!! Thankyou for the mandate of the contest too, such sadness and madness in our world and just lately all that our national paper's have focused on is Carol Vorderman leaving Countdown, even in the local store they were discussing it, it's nonsensical that society has seemingly become desensitized to the reality of trauma and tragedy and instead focuses on faux celebrity. Don't misunderstand me, CV is a nice woman, uh oh, am rambling aren't I? !
