FURTHER NOTE TO ENTRANTS - Friday 18 July...
I am stil feeling rather under the weather... I think I have decided my top 10 in this competition (which is NOT the way the entries are currently listed) - but I do not want to commit myself until I am feeling better... So I shall not be putting up the final list until Monday morning (21st).
NOTE TO ALL ENTRANTS... 16 July...
I am not feeling very well today (16 July) and the most I have managed to do is to START the preliminary sort-through...
I hope to finish the judging by Friday... but in case I cannot, may I remind you to wait until the results have been announced before commenting on other people's entries - if you want to gain bonus points, that is!
AND PLEASE... do not panic or get despondent if I have not yet placed your entry/ies in the Preliminary Finalists list... I often have to break off quite suddenly... as I said, I am not very well just now...
===================================
Yes, that is what I said, FOURTEENTH July...
I am under huge pressure of work at the moment, but cannot let so significant a date pass unmarked.
This is a competition for poems of any length and in style that celebrate some aspect of France past or present, and/or incorporate familiar French words or expressions in a meaningful manner, and in such a way that no translation is necessary.(Franglais is acceptable, if wittily done!)
Enter as many times as you choose (providing your entries are relevant). Prewritten poems are particularly welcome, and if relevant, may gain bonus points.
Those are the main requirements. However, in the spirit of the FETE:
LIBERTE
Although a good poem should not need visual material to enhance its effect (and a less-good one cannot be improved by it), nevertheless, on this occasion entrants are at LIBERTY - if they so wish - to add an illustration or border. But it MUST be relevant to France and/or the particular subject of the poem! Likewise, you may use any appropriate colour-scheme - provided that the text/background contrast is sufficient for it to be easily read. (NOT purple on black, for example)
BUT PLEASE: NO sparkling or flashing backgrounds - - they tend to give me migraine (NB. French loan-word!), and could provoke a seizure in any chance reader suffering from petit mal or grand mal (likewise, French loan-words!)
EGALITE
Please note that I shall not read or acknowledge any entry until after the competition has closed. This means that early entries do not gain an advantage from my greater familiarity with them, thus promoting EQUALITY.
FRATERNITE
And I request all competitors to refrain likewise from reading (and a fortiori commenting) on each other's entries prematurely. (This eliminates the possibility of a poet revising an entry on the basis of doubtless well-meant advice from a fellow-entrant - thereby eliminating the very feature that the judge would have commended.) Commenting AFTER the competition has been judged is a very different matter, and - to promote such exchanges and the spirit of poetic FRATERNITY, as usual in my competitions there will be bonus points for those competitors who comment during the appropriate period - i.e. AFTER the competition has been judged and the results announced.
-------
PLEASE NOTE THAT
I am at present only specifying the minimum 300 points for the winner. I intend, however, to increase this substantially and to award points to the 9 runners-up (making 10 points-winners in all - for on this occasion, we must surely be "decimal"!).
+However, I shall decide the amounts later, in accordance with the number and standard of entries.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on July 22, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 7 people
- Final notes: am still feeling very unwell... and am having more and more demands (domestic, work and human-rights!) being made on me with which I can hardly cope.
But here is my top 10 list...
I shall be "topping up" your points with the various bonuses in due course... and (since this is a celebration) there will also be points for certain poets who failed to get their poems in on time - and one who withdrew his entry by mistake - as sometimes happens...
In the meantime, the period for commenting on each other's entries is now open - and will run for a week - i.e. until midnight ("Allpoetry" time!) 28.29 July. Bonuses will be awarded for meaningful comments...
PLEASE do not remove your poems from the competition
until AFTER the bonuses have been awarded. However, since some people in the past HAVE removed their poems prematurely, may I suggest that when you have commented on other entrants' work, you send me an "IM" message giving the authors and titles of the works concerned, so that if necessary I can still locate your comment.
I shall send you a proper report on the competition and also the links to the three poems which - so to speak - fell by the wayside, and which are also eligible for bonus-gaining comments, as soon as I can... probably tomorrow!

Excellent! A contest for Bastille Day! A pity I have to go away for ten days, but I will try to find something for this.
