why do you live

what do you really live for? if practically everything in your life was suddenly and irrevocably stripped from you, what would drive you, in its absence, to abandon love and life? what can't you be without? why? in this contest i'm looking for someone who thinks this through. i don't want you to dismiss any single thought that comes into your head. everything you think of that you never talk about, never even really acknowledge that you thought of, i want to read it. the darkest place you can find in your own head, i want to you spill all the light your awareness can muster into it, and then write about it and how it relates to what you love. our loves and fears and hates are all tied together and connected in hopelessly complex webs of memories and judgments, and also gaps in knowledge and memory. try to unwind that knot of concepts sitting in your mind, and write a poem.

so it appears that message i sent to all of you (except of course those who've entered after i sent it) royally pissed off at least one of the participants in this contest to the point of removing their work. well i'm sorry i really didn't intend for anyone to take that message personally as a distinct diatribe towards anyone's work. i just wanted to see some editing. no matter how hard you work on anything or how perfect you think you've made it, i know there will always be something you can make better. you can still disagree with me on that and not change anything if you want, i was just putting it out there.

well, now that you gave all of us that note, does that mean you're going to re-read every one's poems?
