WHAT AP SLAM IS

It is a testing under time pressure of both poetry SKILL, and performance-how well YOU THE POET WILL entertain AN audience. Some slams only test popularity- this one does not- which makes it doubley hard for all brave poets who decide to enter this contest.

The actual contest (next stage- this contest is just the sign up and to win 300 points), is a performance.  You will be performing your poetry 'on stage' for the entire AP community (who will be 'watching' as the audience), and for the judges.  I create the stage through the contest page.  Then pull the curtain using the edit button to create new scenes and you perform as soon as the page is refreshed.  There will be around 10 different rounds where you will have to under pressure come up with poetry showing your skill in various techniques like rhyme, imagry, form poetry like Haiku's ect.   2004 was a year everyone remembers at all poetry because it was the year of the slam, and everyone participated.  It was great.  A really good parallel is the AP quickies they have on here.  This is similar to a series of quickies except I came up with the idea way before AP ever heard or tried the contest 'quickies'.  And it is way more exhilerating and way more fun!!!  But if you love quickies you will LOVE this contest.  Quickies don't always require skill though- this contest will.  By the last round of the show we will know who are the best poets on AP, not just who is the most popular.  They will have demonstrated elegance in their poetry (or humor), astounding imagry, great haikus with amazing aha moments in 22 syllables or less, meter, rhyme, free verse, great titles, lasting impressions, and all or none of any poetry technique required to make a poem excellent, fabulous, ingenious.  You are not required to demonstrate this skill now.  For this particular contest you only need to write a fun introduction for your self introducing how great you are.  Don't be intimidated.  It is all in the spirit of fun.  A cross between going to a Shakespearian Ballet, listening to the philharmonica orchestra and watching a monty python movie:  fun.

As a slam poet, I find this to be a bit insulting to the idea & spirit of the event. This isn't a poetry slam. This simply has 5 random judges in the audience.

How is the judging done for offline slams? You really do not have to be harsh or even to criticize. Your information and experience can be useful to others offered in the right spirit. But to be harsh and critical is not the way to go. This is an important to lesson for the real world. It is what keeps the cycle and dynamic of disharmony going generation after generation.

It's also important for one to take people's comments with grace. :]

The point I am trying to make is that this isn't a poetry slam. It's more like a multi-round contest of quickie writes.

Yes, I can see where this is "poetry slam" inspired, but I was very disappointed to see that the institutions related to a poetry slam were thrown aside.

I think it's a good idea, a great idea, but "poetry slam"? not the appropriate label in my eyes.

Really whatever- if you do not want to participate just don't read this. I already went through this with people like you 4 years ago. They just weren't a part of it. I am sorry you are disappointed. There were reasons years ago I put 5 judges on- that is because people would have tended to vote for their friends even if the opponents were better. We tried a trial run and that is what happened. I wanted this to be a test of skill not just popularity. The audience also voted, but we weighted their scores with the audience score.

This is as much a slam as you can get for an online slam. It is of course not going to match the idea of an offline slam.

First of all, you don't need to disrespect me.

& I understand why you have 5 judges. I'm totally fine with that. That's the thing that makes it like a slam! xD I am not the one being defensive here over the contest. I am just pointing out that even the way scoring is assessed doesn't ring true to poetry slam. It's an interesting rubric though.

& finally, an online slam is possible:

            http://allpoetry.com/column/2343073
            http://allpoetry.com/column/2343121

I held four group slams, which are a bit of a different format than an individual slam obviously, but still in the spirit of a poetry slam.
