Autism, Poverty and Hope

I have a friend who is a single mom of two children. One child has autism. She used to have a high-powered job working 50 - 60 hours a week and so had little time with her kids. She has since chosen to be unemployed and live below the poverty line to spend more time with her kids.

I would like some poems to encourage her. She is a Christian so poems of faith are more than welcome.

Some suggestions:

Poems that praise her courage and faith
Poems about children
Poems about motherhood
Poems of hope

If the poems are really good, I will compile them into a little book to give her. I will credit you by screen name or real name if you supply that.

Keep the poems clean and G-Rated.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on June 28, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 500, Silver: 300, Bronze: 150, Honorable mention: 2 people
  • Final notes:
Thanks to all who entered. I hope my friend is encouraged by your pieces. I did not judge based on the best poetically written piece but rather which piece I felt would be most encouraging to my friend and her situation. I found that "You're gonna be OK" directly addressed my friend and pointed her to the source of all hope, Christ. "Cornelia" was a beautifully written piece of poetry, told a good story and addressed my friend's situation well. I was very impressed with this piece. "No Charge" addressed motherhood very well and reminds the reader of how precious love is between mother and child.

I used to share a taxi with a guy with Autism and in my college there was also someone with Asperger's, which is similar to autism. It's tough, but it's rewarding when you see them happy.

My ex-husband is the director of an autistic program in Knoxville, TN. He has done an exceptional job with the young man he sits with. I can get you in touch with him if you like and find out all the help available. Does your friend get SSI? She should get paid for taking care of her son. There are also care giver assistant programs available in most states to help her with household chores and errands. There are other programs available through most states and the fed gov. Skye01

I saw this and was going to enter but unfortunately I just missed it. My little brother has autism so I know how they act. My mom works night shifts and I watch Jon a lot...
