Tonight I heard this song for the very first time :
Billie Holiday- My Man

My Man
It was very intense, and very emotional at the end of the song.
Then I looked up her bio, and read a lot from this site:
I was very impressed with what I read, and heard.
Sadly she is no longer alive.
She died at the young age of 44 on July 17th 1959.
She died at the young age of 44 on July 17th 1959.
What I would like is for you to write poems inspired by one of her songs.
It can be any of them.
In your notes please let me know what song inspired your poem.
In your notes please let me know what song inspired your poem.
I am allowing prewrites but your poem must go with one of her songs.
In your notes you still must say what song inspired you.
The poem can be of any length, etc.
Only one write per person.
Sometimes I view before I comment.
I do comment on all of them before I judge.
All site rules apply.
Please make all poems readable.
Prizes may, or may not increase.
I will judge when I have a good quality amount of poems.
If you have any questions IM me because I might miss the note.
Good luck, and have fun!
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on June 10
- Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 2 people
- Final notes: Thank you all so much for your enteries in this contest. The first one won gold because it literally left me speechless. I have reread it several times and each time just amazed by it.
Though I didn't get as many enteries that I wanted to I was still very impressed with the ones that I got. Thank you all again and congrats to the winners.
Most of all thank you symitar for teaching me about Billie Holiday. I wouldn't have listened if she wouldn't have told me.

I have everything she ever recorded. Her voice will shatter your soul, then suture it back up again. She was an artist in every sense of the word; she wrote, arranged, & explored the known boundaries of jazz & the blues. Her versions of "Gloomy Sunday" & "Strange Fruit" rip my heart out. Her renditions of "Them There Eyes" & "What a Little Moonlight Can Do" make me want to dance. She was ~ & still remains ~ an exquisite human being with a gift larger than life. Thank you for hosting. Good luck to those who enter. Be well, Poets & Scribes.

Wonderful idea for a contest, Kari. I know the entries will all be magic. How could they be anything else with such inspiration? Looking forward to seeing what comes in -

Oh, the lady did sing the blues! I discovered Billie when watching a movie some years ago, and I just fell in love with that voice and the heart behind it. I have a difficult time writing sometimes lately, but I will definitely put this in my favorites. I can't imagine not taking part in honoring this wonderful singer. Good luck with your contest. I have that poster on the wall in my husband's computer room, along with other vocalists, and jazz greats. I am bookmarking this contest. I love Billie! Great challenge here! Ahem...look at the picture on my author page.
