Kahlil Gibran “…a tear and a smile”
http://oldpoetry.com/opoem/57387-Khalil-Gibran-A-Tear-And-A-Smile
“I would not exchange the sorrows of my heart
For the joys of the multitude.
And I would not have the tears that sadness makes
To flow from my every part turn into laughter.
I would that my life remain a tear and a smile.”
**********
Please be inspired by this quote and any or all of the complete work to write in brevity, depth and probing style of Gibran.
No upper limits but one hundred words is a good rule of thumb; judging will reward depth of thought, creativity and ideas inspired by the theme.
Metaphor and imagery; free verse preferred, rhyme is welcome.
Closes in one week or after twenty entries, feel free to reserve and return before closing to post your work. If we do not reach 12 entries, the contest will be re-opened.
My thanks to Old Poetry for the use of the theme.
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on June 24, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 500, Silver: 300, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 2 people
- Final notes: The Contest – A Tear and a Smile- is over, my thanks to all who entered their work. I enjoyed reading the inspirations from Gibran; I enjoyed reading your work. My selections for awards are as follows:
In memory of a perfect love - Gold
A very expressive sonnet, with the inner feelings coming from within form and meter to tell something quite important and revealing of an inner person, very well done.
To The Last Drop Of Tear.. – Silver
Has the eastern feel of Gibran’s works the simplicity in words and style to carry bigger ideas and meaningful thoughts, the sense of life as a challenge and the sense of preferring the challenge; this was very well done, wonderful style.
Balanced Wisdom – Bronze
this is a good and creative interpretation of the theme where the idea is that life offers challenges and happiness and we learn from each, lessons that we need. Wonderful thoughtful approach, very nicely done.
Weather Life's Storm – Emerald
a rhyming piece with a good meter and flow. Word choices carry a narrative style of life’s challenges and our ability to remain true to our ideals. Well done.
Both Sides of a Coin – Emerald
Joy and pain, opposites yet connected by our experience, and how in the shades of black and white there is always a gray area, where the things we have learned help us most. This was a very thoughtful poem, well done.
Until next time or next contest, hope all will be safe and well…PK
