Inspired By Longfellow

I love classic poetry. I want you to give me your best, inspired work. I adore the poem below, it always brings out something different in me each time I read it. So here is what I want from you:
1. read, REALLY read it. I want you to feel it.
2. Write whatever this stirs in you to write.
3. No sticky caps crap. I hate that. You all know what stickys are, I refuse to demonstrate.
4. No dirty. There is nothing dirty about the inspiration piece, so please keep it appropriate.
5. No emo, cutting or suicide- that has nothing to do with this piece either.
Please enter your AP name along with (just like that) so I will know you have read the rules.
I know the points are short, I just want to read some really good poems and this is also my first time running a contest.
With all that said, here is your inspiration piece:

Changed

From the outskirts of the town,
Where of old the mile-stone stood,
Now a stranger, looking down
I behold the shadowy crown
Of the dark and haunted wood.

Is it changed, or am I changed?
Ah! the oaks are fresh and green,
But the friends with whom I ranged
Through their thickets are estranged
By the years that intervene.

Bright as ever flows the sea,
Bright as ever shines the sun,
But alas! they seem to me
Not the sun that used to be,
Not the tides that used to run.
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on May 17, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 100, Bronze: 50, Honorable mention: 3 people
  • Final notes:
Thanks to everyone for entering. Magnificent writing! Congratulations to the winners. You all blew me away with your pieces, and I feel honored to have been able to read such wonderful pieces of poetry. This contest was hard to judge because everyone's writing and contents were exceptional. Honorable Mentions are in no specific order. I would like to say this to each of you:
    1. to the writer of "Fate"- this piece was truly inspired. And inspiring. It was beautiful it had a great flow. Thank you for entering.
    2. to the writer of "When Memories Relapse"- your piece touched my heart on a very deep level. I think everyone has those moments in their life where fond memories are sorely missed. You captured that feeling to the letter. Thank you so much.
and last, but most certainly not least, to the writer of "The Pillage Hangman..."- I had to read your piece a few times to finally grasp exactly all of what was being said (and what was being parodied) and I must say you impressed me. When I first read the piece, I nearly Disqualified it because of the impression I had from just looking at that first shocking image and reading the first few lines. Funny how IMPRESSION quickly turned to IMPRESSED. And how. This was a great read. Thank you greatly for entering.

and finally, to the writer of "Shug Macwathers"- I wish I had had another spot for this one. I want to give this special recognition simply because I loved the story you created, I loved the atmosphere, the feel of the piece and your inspiration piece was amazing. You kept to the style of Hiawatha and pulled off a great piece. I am so glad you entered. Thanks.

Thanks again to everyone. You all did a fantastic job.
