Big Bash for Old Friends and New

Hey there, guys and gals!  I'm back to invite you guys to another party! Sunday, May 11 is my birthday. I'll be turning. . . yeah, right, no WAY I'm tellin' my age. Put it this way, I'm old enough to know better, and young enough to pretend otherwise! :P

For this contest, I'm not really looking for birthday poems or anything like that. I just want you to write from your heart. I want to read whatever speaks your voice.

Those I choose for winners will contain lots of poetic beauty, but a definite message. If you know me, you know I am a sucker for love poems and poems of faith or anything with immense beauty or brawn.

Please refrain from outright erotica and profanity. Any style, free verse or form, rhyme or not; just make it YOURS.

10-40 lines

For inspiration, I offer a couple of favorite poems by my favorite poet, Elizabeth Barrett Browning. You may write something totally unrelated if you feel so inspired.

From Sonnets from the Portuguese

XI
And therefore if to love can be desert,
I am not all unworthy. Cheeks as pale
As these you see, and trembling knees that fail
To bear the burden of a heavy heart,--
This weary minstrel-life that once was girt
To climb Aornus, and can scarce avail
To pipe now 'gainst the valley nightingale
A melancholy music,--why advert
To these things? O Belovèd, it is plain
I am not of thy worth nor for thy place!
And yet, because I love thee, I obtain
From that same love this vindicating grace,
To live on still in love, and yet in vain,--
To bless thee, yet renounce thee to thy face.

XIII
And wilt thou have me fashion into speech
The love I bear thee, finding words enough,
And hold the torch out, while the winds are rough,
Between our faces, to cast light on each?--
I drop at thy feet. I cannot teach
My hand to hold my spirit so far off
From myself--me--that I should bring thee proof
In words, of love hid in me out of reach.
Nay, let the silence of my womanhood
Commend my woman-love to thy belief,--
Seeing that I stand unwon, however wooed,
And rend the garment of my life, in brief,
By a most dauntless, voiceless fortitude,
Lest one touch of this heart convey its grief.

So, there ya have it.  Enjoy your writing.  Enjoy yourself.  Can't wait to see what marvels you dream up!  Reservations welcome.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on May 21
  • Rewards: Gold: 500, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100
  • Final notes:

Thanks to everyone who made my Birthday Bash contest so enjoyable for me. And truly, old AND new friends showed up with beautiful gifts, as I had hoped. I am so thankful to have been blessed by your words and thoughts.

GOLD - I'd Sing You a Love Song if Words knew How--
My first exposure, I think, to this poet. Some really telling imagery in this one that spoke so much. Short and powerful with a beautiful ending.

    SILVER - Sensory Memory
Really spoke to me of love and loss in such beautiful terms, and teaches that for both, we can be grateful.

    BRONZE - A Dewdrop Rose
Also a new poet to me. Woot! I was so impressed with the simplicity of expression-- profound thought contained in the simple metaphor of a flower.

There were NUMEROUS other pieces so worthy of acknowledgement, even some that are not necessarily ranked among the finalists were exquisite poems. Please check out one another's work and leave an encouraging comment. You will be so pleased you did!

Once again thank you all for your beautiful poems and for taking time to share bits of your hearts with me.
