PATRIOT OF THE FREE WORLD CONTEST - #75 - Regardless of how we might feel about leaders and politics

We are still fortunate. I'm a Viet-Nam Veteran from the USA, but this doesn't have to be the USA, Aussies, British, Canadian, wherever; this is about patriotic or not so patriotic if you feel that way.

PROMPT: PATRIOT

AT LEAST 10 LINES, NO MORE THAT SAY ABOUT 50

To be patriotic does not mean you have to agree with present day policies

definition: pa·tri·ot (pā'trē-ət, -ŏt') pronunciation
n.
One who loves, supports, and defends one's country.

I reserve the right to close this contest whenever(not that I will but I always wanted to say that) lol

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on May 10, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 4 people
  • Final notes:
Well, I learned a great deal from this contest and I discovered that being patriotic can't be as simple as just loving your country leaving out politics because political policy effects what our flag represents, but I also feel politics of the times should not make us forget about those that gave their lives for this country.
Bottom line is the flag represents freedom, justice, human rights, compassion, truth, honesty, a government of the people for the people(all the people)and a host of other good things like morals and right from wrong and lets not forget free speech and freedom of choice and those are the things we should believe in and be proud of and what our flag stands for.

Allot of people complain, well only the people can correct what is wrong it's not our flag....
"Yes, the government is made up of a bunch of crooks. Yes, the gap between the rich and the poor is widening....yet, even I am not stupid enough to believe that changing whoever sits on the throne every time they screw up will lead to a better future. Do we really need a new President to stop us from dumping our garbage in the streets, to stop us from ignoring the homeless and hungry in America, to be able to follow something as simple as traffic lights or teach us to love our own country? Sure, there’s a lot of people in government who deserve to be shot. But let’s take a look at ourselves first. There’s a lot of blame to go around after all, We go around blaming everyone and everything, it will not feed the poor. Will not lower the cost of education. Will not stop crime. Will not clean up the streets. The only thing that is going to make things different is the people each and every one of us and something tells me if we don't love our country who is going to care about making it right. Apathy spawns anarchy.
I don't need to run anymore contest that are controversial in politics, I thought to myself but now maybe I might.

Thanks for your entries, God Bless our troops and God Bless this country and the red white and blue

I always loved the Quote by Thomas Jefferson
"Patriotism is not a short, frenzied outburst of emotion, but the long and steady dedication of a lifetime."

I will try to get something written, great contest

      very well expressed

and remembering that America was well within Jeffersons life span as far as this countries age it fit very well. Now that we are over 200 years old I think patriotism is not a short frenzied era of emotion but the long and steady dedication of generations of lifetimeS
