Share Your First Poem

The square of the hypotenuse
The square of the hypotenuse
The square of the hypotenuse.

What was that it happened
To Socrates to Jesus?

I am not sure if this is the entire poem or not but it was the first of mine to be published, in the high school yearbook. I had written others before that but cannot remember them at all. Maybe it's just as well.

If you have a first poem from when you were young (or even so young) and you're not ashamed to share its unique qualities, please send to me. You probably know by now that I am particular about typos but, in this case, please do reproduce the poem exactly as it was then -- typos, spelling mistakes, funny turns of phrase.

The piece can be from your old high school yearbook or it can be something that never got published other than in your mother's scrapbook. If you like, it can be the first poem that saw the light of day on Allpoetry.

Needless to say, they will all be PWs though you are allowed to reconstruct what you can remember.

Come on, let's have them. Don't be embarrassed.

Thank you for a fun couple of hours. It filled up that fast and I was almost tempted to add a couple of places though I'm not sure that's possible. Let's do it again sometime. I just loved reading all your first attempts and some of them were very good too.

It was written in the summer of 1969 and contained the lines

I'll get that mouse if it ends my days
I don't care what his means and ways

Fortunately the rest is lost in the annals of Wembley Junior High School.

Cricketjeff, you were a born rhymer, right from the start. Too bad that fragment is all that remains.

Thank you all for the submissions. I will try to finish judging them in the next day or two. Can't believe how fast they came in. It's funny the things that appeal as subjects and the things that don't.

I was feeling tired and down when I set the contest up. Well, I'm still tired but not so down.

    Good night, all.
