A Call for Chapbooks

According to Google, chapbooks started as timeless books of jests and tales, sold by itinerant chapmen in England in the 16th century.

Wikipedia says that chapbooks have "been revitalized in the past 20 years by the widespread availability of low-cost copy centres and the cultural revolutions spurred by both zines and poetry slams...generating hundreds upon hundreds of self-published chapbooks..."

A professor friend recently printed up a chapbook of my work and ran off 50 copies or so, which he sold and taught to his students, which resulted in a small profit for me. Nice when you haven't been published much. You all know how hard the mass market can be but this small success made me feel good and I felt good again when the chapbook recently won a contest. I was invited to read from it after my prize was presented.

The chapbook is a nice compact form in which to present poetry or short prose pieces. Please send me a poem or a short factual or fictional sketch, either new work or a prewrite. Then make an outline of your proposed chapbook and include it in your author's notes, along with any other pertinent information. I have never seen a chapbook on AP but, if you have one already completed, please include the links.

If the response warrants, you may have a chance to work on your chapbook again. I look forward to receiving some interesting submissions.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on May 2, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 150, Bronze: 75, Honorable mention: 1 people
  • Final notes:
Thank you for the contributions, which have been interesting to read. I still have chapbooks very much on my mind and, as a certain APer suggested, perhaps I should have extended the contest.

There may be a repeat coming up again, one of these days.

Congratulations to winners and to all contibutors. Good luck with your chapbooks.
  • To judge this contest, you need to have at least as many finalists as you have rewards. You have 4 awards but only 3 finalists.

Yes, but what do you propose to do with the Chapbooks when you get them?
