(poster from theatrical production of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night or What You Will”)
from Twelfth Night
Sweet-and-Twenty
O mistress mine, where are you roaming?
O, stay and hear! Your true love’s coming,
That can sing both high and low:
Trip no further, pretty sweeting;
Journeys end in lovers meeting,
Every wise man’s son doth know.
What is love? ‘tis not hereafter;
Present mirth hath present laughter;
What’s to come is still unsure:
In delay there lies no plenty;
Then come kiss me, sweet-and-twenty!
Youth’s a stuff will not endure.
William Shakespeare
These lyrics to “Sweet-and-Twenty” are from my favourite of Shakespeare’s plays, “Twelfth Night or What You Will”, as is this poster. But they aren’t your prompts…although the may help. On April 26th I turned “Sweet-and-Twenty”…OK, maybe not sweet, but it was my 20th birthday. To celebrate, I’m holding this contest, to which I want 20 entries. You seeing a pattern emerging? To enter, you must find out something about me by:
* Visiting my AP page
* Reading my poetry and comments
* Look at previous contests of mine
* Gathering random trivia (e.g. I love Shakespeare, especially “Twelfth Night or What You Will”)
* Ask me questions
Then, write a poem about me. Sounds interesting? I hope you like a challenge!
Now for the dreaded…
RULES:
- YoU wRiTe LiKe ThIs AnD yOu WiLl Be ImIdIaTlY dQeD
- Understandably, no Pre-Writes, but you may enter more than one poem if you really want. They must all be good, relevant AND DIFFERENT.
- You can include direct references to me, my writing, etc if you like. But they'd better be good.
- Your poem may be of any style/content but if I judge it to be deliberately offensive that poem will be DQed (Hint: Erotica isn’t going to win my favour)
- Reserving a place is encouraged because I know entrants will require thinking time
I'll be judging when I have twenty entries and may add more points and HMs then.
Good luck. Have fun!

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on July 13, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 400, Bronze: 400, Honorable mention: 17 people
- Final notes: WOW! What fantastic entries! I've never run a contest before where I thought EVERY entry deserved a trophy...but there's a first for everything! My sister said this contest was a terrible conceit...she's probably right lol. I thought only my close friends would write serious entries and that the rest would be "Happy-Birthday-Limericks" and the like. I’ve been AMAZED at all the terrific poems written just for me! It took me forever to decide on final placings and, in the end, it was a very “personal taste” choice. Well, the poems WERE about ME…so, what else could it be? I’m commenting on every entry, so if I haven’t commented on yours yet, leave it in the contest and I will very soon.
Thanks again to everyone for such brilliant poetry. The best birthday present I’ve ever received. I hope to read more by you soon.
J.P. Troy
