Let me be very specific here - the mention of alcohol or any mind altering substance - whether used as a metaphor or not, will get your poem removed from this contest. This is not what I want smashed to mean.
I recently finished reading a memoir entitled SMASHED. I stumbled onto the book entirely by accident. I was actually using a search engine to look for a synonym for the word "SMASHED" itself. I found information about this book, instead, which I immediately decided that I must read. The book was written by a brilliant young author named Koren Zailckas. The plot had a lot to do with drinking. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to use the word "smash" or "smashed" as inspiration for or within a poem, in any form or tense that you choose. You may use a synonym for the word, instead. However, the biggest stipulation is that you MAY NOT use the word "smashed" as a synonym for drunk or intoxicated. Please do not mention alcohol in the poem at all - in the title, in the piece as itself, whether used as a metaphor or in some other manner. You will not be required to use the word, in any form or tense, within your poem as long as you use the term or word "smashed" as the inspiration for your piece and the piece does not explore the topic of intoxication. Got it? Good! Now get to writing! As always, correct spelling and proper use of grammar will get you much further than incorrect spelling and improper grammar. I don't like DQ-ing - I get no joy out of it. So please, read and obey all rules and submit pre-writes only if they meet the criteria. My preference is for free verse, but I will accept rhyme, as well.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on May 6, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 30, Bronze: 30
- Final notes: thank you for worthy entries - all of you, and for getting the point of the prompt and not making me explain it to you - thank you for showing me the courtesy of reading all of the rules and for providing such quality submissions to my little contest. All provided me with worthwhile reading, however, I am a moody and self absorbed judge and the finalists are arranged in the order of my preference - according to what I think is most poetic.
