This is the first of several contests featuring the work of great Latin poets writing in Spanish or Portuguese. This contest has the approval of Old Poetry. http://oldpoetry.com/oauthor/show/Manuel_Bandeira
I had an instant liking for the poetry of Manuel Bandeira. It had a sense of depth of understanding of human emotions and how we really see ourselves and others around us. The prompt for this contest is the Old Poetry translations of “Naked”, and “The Last Poem” thanks to Old Poetry Moderator and Researcher MariGoes for the marvelous translations.
I thought these poems were a good reflection of Bandeira because it showed how much he could do to show deeper feelings and emotions in the use of small, simple easily understood words… a remarkable ability; let’s see if you agree…
Twenty lines is a guideline
Twenty entries maximum
Free verse preferred
Judge will reward depth of thought, creative use of lines and phrasings, and use of imagery and metaphor; pretty much in that order.
FEEL FREE TO RESERVE AND WRITE BEFORE THE CLOSING
Prompts:
1. The last poem [O último poema]
by Manuel Bandeira
So I wish my last poem.
To be tender saying the most simple things and less intentional
To be ardent as a sigh without tears
To have the beauty of the flowers almost without fragrance
The purity of the flame where limpid diamonds are consumed
The passion of the suicides who end their lives without reason
2. Naked
by Manuel Bandeira
When you are dressed,
Nobody imagines
The worlds hidden
Under your clothes.
(Thus, in the day light,
We do not have notion
Of the stars that shine
In the deep sky.
But naked is the night
And naked in the night,
Vibrate your worlds
And the worlds of the night.
Your knees shine.
Your navel shines,
Shines all your
Abdominal lyre.
Your exiguous bosoms
- As two small fruits
in the firmness
Of your firm torso
- Your bosom shines)
Ah! Your hard nipples!
Your back!
Your flanks!
Ah, your shoulders!
When naked, your eyes
Become naked also:
Your gaze lingers longer,
Slower, more liquid.
Then, within those eyes,
I float, swim, jump,
Lower in a perpendicular
Diving!
I dive to the depths
Of your being, there where
Your soul smiles at me,
Naked, naked, naked.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on April 21, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 500, Silver: 300, Bronze: 200, Honorable mention: 2 people
- Final notes: The contest, Naked- Manuel Bandeira has ended; and there were many more wonderful poems than awards. I have a new policy of limiting use of emerald awards, and held to it for two here when I might easily have given many more on the basis of merit.
Thanks to all who entered I enjoyed your wonderful poetry.
My selections for awards are as follows:
Before I sink – gold
simple words to bring deeper thoughts, and delve into meanings of existence; so very well done for gold.
Time to Give My Heart Away – silver
and she did write it for everyone… such a poignant lesson here, feelings mean so very much, define so much of us, so true.
Clear Queue – bronze
a style here that I found very appealing, a message from a person’s heart to another’s heart, struck true like a master’s hand on common tools, wonderful simple words to carry a depth of feelings here, so very well done for bronze.
On Wednesday I undressed for Manuel Bandeira - emerald
and no doubt could have exchanged this poem for bronze in the judging, depth and an elegance of style here, so very appealing.
Finale – emerald
a legacy of generations tied to the last and bridged to the the next, wonderful words of wisdom.
Some special words are in order here:
“the last touch of my pen”
Not for judging, but not to pass without mention and expressing thanks for a wonderful poem, in a voice of humility and gratitude for the privilege of life… such wonderful work here.
Two young writers gave us a taste of bright poetic futures:
“The page winds down to an end” -
a wonderful metaphor to life and acceptance-
“Between Breathing” most definitely worthwhile reading and experiencing this poetry.
My thanks to OP, to MariGoes[translations] and to all who entered, it was an honor to read your work. Until the next opportunity to remember and honor a master poet from the past, please be safe and well...PK

I am always glad to meet new poets, whether they are here at AP or at our sister site, OP! You and Mari are doing something so special here, and I take my hat off, and bow to the efforts of you both. I am reserving a space here, and as soon as I am back on course with my new laptop (Thanks Dez and Janice) I will get this done. If in fact the contest is looking like the deadline will come before then, I will use hubby's PC, as I am now, to get that entry in.
Great contest PK and Mari! I love you both!

Beautiful poetry you have here, PK - thanks for introducing me to his poetry. I hope I can write something before the contest closes (well, my muse has been very inactive lately, lol) but if I don't make it, at least I have Bandeira's poetry to return too. Great contest!
