written for the gist of love

this is a prompt for the contest
the poem included

Eight

By Rod McKuen

clouds are not the cheeks of angels you know
they're only clouds.
Friendly sometimes
but you can never be sure.
if I had longer arms
I'd push the clouds away
or make them hang above the water somewhere else,
But I'm just a man
who needs and wants,
mostly things he'll never have.
looking for that thing that's hardest to find.

I've been going a long time now
along the way I've learned some things.
You have to make the good times yourself
take the little times and make them into big ones
and save the times that are all right
for the ones that aren't so good.

I've never been able
to push the clouds away by myself.
Help me
Please?

    SMASHING!

This is fantabulous poetry, friend! Must say I thoroughly was with you every nano-inch of the way as you floated on the waves of airy musery... what a fine trip into the wild blue yonder... DW

    Maybe if time permits

At the moment I am waiting for results in two competitions and do not have time anymore for all the supportive comments it demands.

    Another time? Thanks for asking.

  • I never could write a satisfyingly good love poem. I've never really got the whole technique down. This could be a challenge.

Oh..that is a hard lesson to learn but it really is true that we have the power to make our life good, it does not just happen always. Such a positive write and very thought provoking. A great reminder. Thanks for sharing this. I really enjoyed it..Blessings, Patty
  • Your poetic prompt for this contest, is from one of my favorite poets. Hope you don't mind my posting a couple of links, for those who may not of heard of Rod McKuen. I can remember when "Stanyon Street and Other Sorrows", was first published. It has always been one of my favorite books, as well as, "Listen to the Warm". One of my favorite lines has always been, something like this: "I could lie in your shadows shadow and live on sounds your stomach makes."
If I remember correctly, this line came from one of the poems in: "Stanyon Street and Other Sorrows"; although I don't remember from which poem.
