My son was a wonderful young man, who loved to help others, I guess you could say he had a heart of gold! He could always make me laugh even when I was boiling mad! He was killed in a car crash at age 18, along with his two cousins Michael age 23 and Haley age 11 on August31,2003...My son's name was Donald Rene Bonham 2nd but we all called him Bubba......his birthday is coming up on march 27th he would have been turning 23 this year, but I guess he will forever remain 18.....his birthday is always hard for me because I remember every detail of his birth...I gave birth to him at home with a mid-wife, on my best friend's birthday...strange enough he died on her husband's birthday! Back then you did not get to know ahead of time if it was going to be a boy or a girl...I had always wanted a boy, but I had 2 daughters before I finally got my baby boy!
So what I want you to do is pen me a poem for Bubba's 23rd birthday it does not have to be about his birthday, but it at least needs to be something about him...it can even be to me from him or from me to him! Just something in memory of my beloved son!
I will try to comment on all entries...even if it is at the end of the contest when I am judging them!
Here is a poem I wrote last night for my son!
"These Empty Arms"
These empty arms yearn for you,
my precious baby boy.
While on this earth you brought,
your momma so much joy.
This year you'd have been turning 23,
I wonder what you would have become.
I know God must have needed you,
to take from me, my precious only son.
I remember how you'd make me laugh,
even when I was boiling mad.
I miss you so very much my son,
and this makes me very sad.
I bet it is pretty cool up there in Heaven,
getting to hear the Angels sing.
I can't wait to join you in Heaven son,
what a joy that meeting will bring.
Until my work on earth is through,
I will just have to wait.
Ask God for me one favor please,
to let you be there, to greet me at the gate.

I am so sorry for your loss, it must be so hard. I can't imagine the pain of such a loss.

I think this is a wonderful idea..I hope you read my poem called "Bubba" for he was my adopted son and this is so touching for you to come up with this contest right after I wrote the poem. I will try to come up with something for you and know that my prayers are always with you.

What a painful experience you have suffered.

I will see what I can come up with to honor your son.

Oh Ellan, I do feel for you, no one should bury a child before ourselves. I have felt the pain of it and I cry with you. Know you are in my thoughts. Love, C

Your poem on this contest is sweet and heart felt. I see the love of a momma in it. Something I never knew or experienced as a boy. Great job and I hope the contest brings you many sweet and touching poems. God bless you, Mark -
I am also a mother who has lost her babies. My daughters birthday was resently on the 25th of February 2005. She would have been a little girl of 3 years old.
Can I just extend my condolenses to you and your family, and good luck to everyone entering this very heart felt and personal competition.

I am always sorry.
It always pains me to hear of a young man's death. Since my own brother was killed when he was 21. He had come back from a war when he was on furlough and killed by a drunken driver. So my heart goes out to you and yes this is a good way for you to heal. -
