Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on May 6, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 500, Silver: 300, Bronze: 200, Honorable mention: 50 people
  • Final notes:
Some of you may be surprised to find the closing lines of this contest and some of you may not.

From the day I posted this contest to the day it closed I was hounded by people behind the scenes with a lot of negativity. Some of those people were on my favorite's list, which surprised me, and others I did not even know, some had three sign on names, some didn't even have poems posted with their names, some had not entered the contest, some entered the contest three times....

The point is put the word "publication" on a contest and it is like the kiss of death.

All of the fun went out from the journey for me and what I was trying to do was support a lot of artists, plus give new people a chance. I have been at All Poetry for a long time...

People accused me of some strange things...including using this contest somehow to my benefit. What benefit? My books and CD's have been shipped to over 53 countries at this point. I don't need a contest at All Poetry to market my own work. This project I was doing for the pure journey of working with other artists to create an anthology.

Well, to make a long story short, there is to be no anthology and I am leaving All Poetry. I do have friends here and you know where to find me, so you are always welcome.

It is the same old story, I know, when anyone leaves All Poetry. I guess that means there is a time for all things to change, which is why the sages keep on writing that cliche year after year, century after century...which why cliche's are useful.

So, this cliche just left the nuthouse!

You are all fabulous writers! I encourage you to send your work out to "real" publishers!

The honorable mentions are not in any particular order.

I had some great times and I really thank all the super cool people for their generous support of my poetry over the years!

    Love,

    Zayra

    Dearest Zayra

I have witnessed your works poetically, and as a humanitarian on this site for over two years. I have learned from you, been encouraged by you, you've shared information, given your light-energies away, freely...

I am always more than honored to participate in your contests here at AP. This is a generous offering on your behalf. I am not surprised!

Congratulations on your Publishing Company. Thank you for considering us to become published.

    Bookmarked for sure!

Much Love & Many Blessings ♥

    Dear Zayra Yves

I would be honored to be a part of this contest, and will try my best to do well. Three entries in one, no more than 100 words? I think I can do this justice. Are there any restrictions regarding views such as sensuality, thoughts on the skin color, etc, because I do not want to offend, merely to present passing thoughts for personal speculation.

    Hi Zayra,

I'm curious to know if this book is being self-published by Lulu?

    Thanks.

      HI Lisa,

It has not been decided yet which printer Jaden and I will pick for this project.

I will have to take a moment to go research Lulu for specifics; however, Lulu does not actually offer "self-published by Lulu" or at least not to my knowledge.

The way I understand Lulu and the way I have personally accessed Lulu's services, either one is "self-published" and uses Lulu's printing and publishing services, or one picks the "published by Lulu" option. In either case, Lulu is a viable service that can be used to the highest levels of professionalism provided one knows how to use it.

Furthermore, in this situation as it applies to this contest, there will be no one in this anthology that will be "self-published" as the editors are not participating in having their poetry included in the book, and it is being published through my business.

Jaden and I will select the poems from those submitted, and it will be open on other forums as well, not just All Poetry, then we will work together on putting together the publication. It will have an ISBN and a Library of Congress Number. It will go into Global Distribution as both of my books already are, wether with Lulu or not, and it will be advertised all the places the editors decide to advertise it, which includes all the places I already have established my book, i.e. Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Book Slut and many local bookstores here in the Bay Area and more. I have sold several hundred copies of my books through Lulu and through my website.

Having said all of that, if someone is opposed to using Lulu as a printing and distribution service, then quite possibly this is not a contest or anthology for said person to submit their work. It could well be that we do not use Lulu. The company and tools used for printing are far less important than the minds and skills of the editors putting the collection together. I assure you it will be professional and the writers chosen will be proud to be part of it. I have the advantage of faith and experience.

It is not a "vanity" either because no fees are required for entry or publication. It is not "self-published" because the editors are picking and publishing; the printer and services are optional.

Thank you for asking the question, as I am sure there are others who were wondering the same thing, so now they know as well. The printer has not been chosen and we will keep you posted.

      Zayra & Jaden

        Hi Zayra,

        Thanks for your response.

I think, if I understand correctly, you will be using some type of self-publishing site to create the book not shopping it at established publishing houses like Ausable, Bloodaxe etc. Right?

Lulu is a great service for those that want a book and want it fast. It is a great service for charitable/fund-raising. They have made making a book quite a simple process, amazing really.

Congrats on your success with it for your Lulu products. I know lots of Lulu poets who haven't been that successful (but still enjoy having a book to share with family and friends).

I have some experience with Lulu and have an upcoming project for a charity event at my daughter's school in which we will be creating a chapbook of the kids poems to sell for a fund-raiser after April's Poetry Month, but without purchasing the ISBN number which anyone can do right from Lulu. They make it so painless!

I have no idea what your business is so I cannot comment on what it adds to the publishing of the book, but it sounds like it must be a marketing type of business that provides help with promotion etc. We all know poets are usually pretty bad at that sort of thing so any help in that regard is positive (not that I totally agree with "sales = success" equation when it comes to poetry and art in general but that's a different discussion )

        Re:

The company and tools used for printing are far less important than the minds and skills of the editors putting the collection together.

and I would simply add, and even more important than the minds and skills of the editors putting the collection together, is the gift of the poems they have to work with.

And may your project receive many gifts so that the charitable organization of choice benefits greatly ....

        Lisa

I have noticed the editors of poetry publishers accept or don't accept the poem exactly as submitted. once accepted the poem is sometimes, but rarely, edited; however, i have had two editors call me late at night with a question or two regarding a word in a line which they thought I might want to change. Also, it is common for an editor to make comments on the reject slip, if the poem was considered a near hit. Then, the writer is sometimes invited to resub the poem, but those comments tend to be very general as to tone, and not very useful. I think to help the writer improve or to better submit poetry more suited to your publication is a great idea. ,,,Moqui

oops ... i forgot to say: Most editors and publishers do not put their own works into their publications, but some do. For example, the poetry editor of the Atlantic Monthly, a fairly presigous mag for poetry, sticks his broccoli in there any time he darn well pleases and it is a bit tacky, since he is not a very good poet, to say the least. I think. On the other hand, the editor of Paris Review, an even more prestigious pub never would do anything like that... so, you being a better poet than either one will ever be, might consider it. It is not unprofessional or unethical or anything like that, but only the best dare do it without ridicule, and you, are one of the best. ,,,Peace ,,,Moqui

This contest is a little bit different because the intention behind it is to publish not just hand out trophies, so we want to give everyone a lot of time to edit their work and sort through their ideas, plus give ourselves enough time to read everyone's work and make our decisions carefully.

      Thank you for checking in.

    You're leaving?
I'm sorry people have responded negatively, some are so cynical and skeptical, but many are not. I know where to find you, but I'd miss you here on AP... I hope you stay, though, because you're a talented poet and a great addition to the site. Those who have to say negative things will know where to go I too have been through some negative and really bad times on AP (even had a contest about why I should stay ) but in the end, it's friends that make it worth staying. Anyway, wish you all the best

    The anthology aside..

I wish you wouldn't leave, but hell, I constantly consider it myself so you won't hear me preach about staying..

except to say.. when you walk away.. they win..
most often like you, I'd leave, it's just that in this case, it's a sad thought, and a loss ..a real loss for many of us.

    but I luv ya anyway..

Zayra, you are one of the best poets, and oddly enough, given the crap the university journals crank out these days, best PUBLISHED poets here. Without you, it will be more likely that my time here will soon end as well. The best poets seem to be those who just can't stomach the loud, wrong, wannabes here. I suspect the dim-bulbs that questioned your motives were those same "poets" that invest in the bazillion fake MFA programs, feeling that their investments in automatic publication in the Timbuk-Three University gazette makes them somehow better than those who don't pay to be published, don't play the political games with puffed-up pretenders who teach what they cannot do.

The few of us who write because we must, who try to learn and improve instead of just ego-stroking are somewhat overwhelmed by the self-important wannabes.

You will be missed! I, of course will continue to stay in touch, and look forward to new ways to collaberate. The effect you have had here will be missed, not only as a breath of fresh air where the poetry tends to the flavor of the day bad prose about nothing with line breaks, but for the impact of your values, generisity, and your giving soul.

To the nay-sayers- if you want this to finish devolving into a social scene for teens and young adults with social difficulties, keep up the good work. If you actually have an interest in poetry, shut up and lay by your dish if you can't respect others.

I'm really disappointed that anyone made you feel bad for wanting to do this project..

    It was a great idea.

I'm happy to have taken place, regardless of the outcome, and congratulate those who entered for having the courage to try

Not easy to put ourselves out there, and so many did.

This is a success regardless of naysayers, Zayra.

    z.

I took a sabbatical- it is now easier to be here.. and less dramatic feeling because i simply "drop by" now.. it feels right

perhaps a good bye with your eye to sometime later rather than never?

    you are wonderful
    full of love
    and spirit- you are one
    of the finest forces
    i know-

    you are a friend
    and you will be missed

but i expect to find you again- someday
    here

    in this little
    odd, miscalculated,
    snide, jealous
    and lovely
    place

    much love,
    Me

Zayra I am so saddned by what you have written at the end of this contest and I am also saddned that some on here found a need to hound you for something you chose to do from the goodnees of your heart. Such is the vast variety of human nature I suppose. I want you to know that in my time on here you have been more than friendly, helpful and wise and I thank you for all of the constructive comments you have given on my work. It will be a darker day each time I log on and not see your name. Please take care and keep in touch somehow. Respectfully, Cheryl

I am incredibly sorry to find that you are leaving the site. You in many ways, along with very fews others, kinda define this place for me. You certainly do have friends here, plenty of them...

I do understand how things can get around here, all the best and I certainly do hope we cross paths again soon...

Remember the quote you had on the contest you hosted for me, Zayra - this one?

"you had the grace to hold yourself, while those around you fell...."

It's as much yours as it is mine, my friend....

Disappointed you're leaving but not surprised

Such fools we have in our midst...
I keep my guard up (fortunately or unfortunately) and have only a few favs on AP. I don't get the copius applauses but I generally avoid the wankers (I hope).
Zayra, you've been an inspiration, not only in your writing but also your kind, honest comments on my works. I thank you . I will see/chat with you again sometime soon, I'm sure .
    Loving wishes -Emmjay

Sighhh...A thousand blessings upon you, Dear Heart ♥ ...& a thousand dirty looks to those who cannot seem to attain adulthood no matter how many opportunities they are given. This woman has such a huge & tender heart. How dare ANY of you question her motives or intentions??? She knows the meaning of the words love, friendship, compassion, understanding, patience, forgiveness...I only hope you change your mind & don't let the negativity make you leave, my dear Friend. There are so many here who love you & know your frustration with this moronic tendencies of others. You know I love you, Zayra. Stay in touch, Sweetie. Wanda

I have been following this contest, for several of my favourites wrote for it. Although we don't know each other besides some occasional comments, I do feel your decision to leave is a sad one, and will be a great loss to this site and specially to your friends.

    Dear Zayra,

I haven't been on the site as much as I used to and although I love AP and so very many members here, I cannot say that I have missed the controversies that pop up every now and again. I have known you as long as you have been on this site. I know you to be one of the foremost poets here. I own both of your CD's and have several books that you have sent to me via pony express. You are generous, fair and blessed with great talent. I am so appalled that you had to deal with the trite attitudes of those who cannot touch your abilities. I so wish each person on this site could better understand your genuine beauty (inside and out). I wish you well with all your endeavors and yes..I know where to find you if I need you. You have my mailing address, and I will be sure to leave a phone number and email address in the IM's.

    I LOVE YOU DEAR LADY!

    Always ♥

    Renee

Zayra . . . There are many in the poetry game who deem themselves to be true practitioners of the written art . . . however there are also many pretenders, many who have not done THE REAL WORK necessary, the inner agonizing journey into the depths of the soul or spirit in an attempt to bring forth something that is worthwhile from the SOURCE. I am not going to go on a tirade toward those who have driven you to this conclusion because this is a public forum and as such the pretenders far outnumber the voices of originality. But if there are many more instances of talented people leaving I too will abandon allpoetry. Your gift of poetics and your always giving presence will be sorely missed . . . perhaps it is fast becoming time for the creation of another site that is more conducive to the few of us who stand shoulder to shoulder beside you . . . much love sister . . . Marc
