We have reached the point in which all of you get the gist of what the judges are looking for. As of now, for you, it has also settled in that we [the judges] are going to be tougher on you than we were before the merge. We have also reached the point in the contest when it’s time to take some risks. What could you do to stand out?

The easiest way [and the way that I recommend] is to simply be yourself. Every poet has an edge. That special something that gives them that creative sparks as much as it does for the personality...it's all part of being talented at expressing himself or herself.

CHALLENGE: You are to write a poem (over 15 lines) about you. It doesn’t have to be completely describing you. It can be about something you went through. It can be about how something changed your life. It can be about where you are from. You can take it any direction you want, as long as you use first person perspective.

By doing this, it is important to know how to phrase your sentences without using the words “I” and “me” every other line.

This challenge will not only bring out who did the best this round, but possibly, which poem had the most personality- and quality. [Remember to keep it balanced].

Deadline: Tuesday, March 11th at 7PM EST.

Good luck!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on March 13, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Honorable mention: 5 people
  • Final notes:
This is the best round out of the entire contest so far. All of you at least did a great job, and I commend all of you for doing that. I believe that it is safe to say that there isn’t a frontrunner anymore, as of right now, and that it is still anyone’s game. The key is consistency, so everyone that does well this round wants to do well next round, and so on. Give it your all every time. Most of you gave us exactly what we wanted to see: passion, personality, the edge, and creativity all mixed into one awesome poem. Most of you achieved that. However, a few of you forgot about technicalities and concentrated more on your character a bit too much…which might be why some of you may find yourself in the bottom three.

And with that said, it’s time to get down what we’ve been waiting for. The bottom three, in alphabetical order, are…

    Lostintheshadows33,

    Olly Olly Oxen Free,

    and SheHasMyHeart.

Two of you will be safe, but one will be eliminated. The first person that I can release to safety is…

Olly Olly Oxen Free - you are safe.

-which leaves us with Lostintheshadows33 and SheHasMyHeart. Both of you have improved tremendously, but whichever one of you stayed the most consistent will move on, as for the other, the journey will end.

The next person eliminated from Teen Idol, placing 8th overall, and the first contestant-member of the jury is…

    Lostintheshadows33.

The road ends here for you tonight in Teen Idol…BUT you still play a key role in the contest. Although you are eliminated and are no longer in the running of becoming AP’s next Teen Idol, as a jury member you will help decide who our Teen Idol will be.

At the end of the contest we will have a top two. The eliminated contestants (from this point and onwards) and the judges will vote for one person, who they believe deserves the title. The one who has the majority will win the entire contest. SO that explains the jury aspect.

SheHasMyHeart, you are safe, and will be competing in the next round.

    Here are the scores:
    (Tangled Angle’s score + Sulfane’s score + Friday’s score = total)

    Ah.Sosha
    (96.0 + 93.4 + 87.1 = 276.5
    Asfand
    (97.4 + 96.0 + 93.5 = 286.9
    Catauthor
    (93.5 + 90.2 + 94.2 = 277.9
    Lostintheshadows33
    (91.1 + 87.4 + 87.7 = 266.2
    Olly Olly Oxen Free
    (95.4 + 92.2 + 87.0 = 274.6
    Raazi
    (91.6 + 94.3 + 91.7 = 277.6
    Rockerchkpoet
    (98.0 + 96.2 + 93.6 = 287.8
    She Has My Heart
    (89.4 + 89.1 + 90.9 = 269.4

    See you next round!

ugh...not so sure about this challenge, Tyler.

Can we just write poems without nouns, instead? That would be easier.

Hmmm... I have a poetry class right now at college. We had a prompt that was to write about a specific place, so I wrote about home and all the different things that made me think about it. She said she would like for me to pick different parts and write about them more. I think the universe is really wanting me to write about it... lol. Darn you universe.

This is a really long comment. lol

    They are getting progressively worse.
But anyway, I now have three crappy first drafts, so yippee!

I will protect the world from poet-Kaitlin's poems by not letting her enter anything until she produces something decent, even if it takes until 5:59 PM tomorrow!

lol yeah because that is going to help. Maybe you ought to call your poem "concussion" instead, in honor of your death, and that being your last poem.

It reminds me of when the TV remote doesn't work, people bang the remote over and over again on the carpet- as if that really helps. It doesn't! Of course, they only discover that when the batteries pop out and the lid to the battery-box pops out and cracks.

ACK! Quick question... MUST there be "I" or "me" or "my" in the poem? I kind of wrote my poem from my perspective... I just didn't use those words.

That's perfectly fine, as long as if I get a strong emotional vibe from it [as in, an emotional connetion with the poem enough to feel connected to the author] --if that makes sense.
But whatever, I'm sure whatever you did worked out good.

lol Just think of something abstract pertaining to the main idea of the poem. Or just have a simple title, but have two or three words; with alliteration, consonance or assonance. But whatever you do, don't do corny garbage.

Like my "living dead" title last time?

And what is consonance or assonance? I've heard of them before, I just forgot what they were.

Don't they have something to do with alliteration?

              Assonance:

              Already ate the bread

              Consonance/Alliteration:
Cats quietly creep across the carpet

basically, they're all the same thing..well to me, it is.

                OH

So assonance is vowels and consonance is like consonants.

But like, if graded the title out of 5 points.. i'd give it like 4.2 based on first impression.

                              too warm.

But I guess it's okay here.

Last monday it was 73 degrees here and then saturday it snowed 8 inches?

                                Go figure.

It was freezing this morning though! And then we get to noon and it's like BAM! 75 degrees.

I already have a deal with someone to switch places with him. He lives in Canada and he wants to come to Florida, so I said I'd trade.

I felt I owed it to you to write, so I have, I don't like what I've done simply because I just don't think it's as good as I could have made it if I'd started a week ago. Lol there's a surprise, I'm complaining about my work again!

Ah, yes, but Tyler hasn't commented on mine yet. And then I will be in the bottom three. And since your poems throughout the competition have been better than mine, I'm "going home" in a sense lol.

I do admit, I have the weakest poems out of everyone from past rounds. Especially the earlier rounds.....if my team lost the first round I would've been gone hahaha.

I think you have improved a lot which is as my friend said to me about me, is more important than winning.

I think it's a close run thing. Good luck! x

Why thank you!!! And, yeah, you're right. I owe so much to this experience, it's really helped me develop my writing.

                Good luck to you, too!!!

Well, I'm not going to lie: I knew this was going to happen. But I am proud of my poem and I am satisfied leaving this round. I got soooo much farther than I ever dreamed of. It's been a pleasure competing with all of you and it's going to be quite interesting to see things from the other side of the competition. I was going to continue to follow this anyway, so this situation was quite convenient.

See you on the other side.

Oh, and I'm going for season 8

Best of luck to you all!!!!!

You did a great job. You improved so much. I can't wait to see how you will do next season. I won't accept you yet, because I'm waiting for more applicants. But I can guarantee you that you will be accpeted no matter what.
