Well!

I am pretty frickin' tired of politics in the poetry land. I know even when some contests are supposed to be judged anonymously, they are not and somehow it becomes a game of who knows who...so I'm spending some points for you all to vent.

I know this is the system and the way of the land, but give it to me straight I'll understand. there will be no floral critiques here.

So give me what u think.

the only rule here is that you don't tell me who you are in any way. no replys or ratings.

I dont care what kind of poetic devices u use or even rhyme schemes. swearing is fine . Make it work though.
if u want to TyPEE fUnNy go ahead I wont dq but make it matter.

I am lookin' for severity.

And as for my judging...I usually get a member of my family to pick em' so I have no slanted views.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on March 14, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 7 people
  • Final notes:
Well this was 1 flippin hard contest to judge. The 10 finalists were very hard to choose from, I had help, and with that I would like to thank all for entering my bitching contest. lol.I did give out greenies as these in my eye are just as good as the top 3 because they are so close in contention, i just felt that the top 3 game me more .

    thanx again.

I always try and find who has written what poem, because I like to give only one trophy to each person as I feel this is fairer.

When entering contests I find it hard not to rate people's comments and reply, whether thanking them or just correcting them. It also is hard to remember which contests you're not supposed to respond to.

    Good luck! x

I will never hold it against them if they accidentally reply in some way. I am just trying to be the most equal with all.

      Its all good.

    Okay.

I agree with the principal of what you are writing. Because I once entered a contest that someone held for a certain person, and this person had been on my favorites list, they did not like the way I wrote the poem. They felt that I did not show enough respect for the person and them. I mean one has to be true to themselves, when I hold contests I want it to be fair to all that enter. Except when it is a group in which the particular contest relates to such as cancer, if a person is a cancer survivor I can understand their particular piece. But I don't limit contests the largest majority of the time. I want people to enter and to encourage authors that I have not read. That is the only way to do it.

I know exactly what you are saying and I think most of us here on AP have come across bias judges in some shape and form at some point. I might add that I judge my contests on the poem that touches me the most or best suits the prompts I have given, sometimes they are friends or favourites but then again if I didn't like the style of their writing they wouldn't be on my favourites list but I never give out trophy's solely because I know someone, to me that makes no sense at all.
I took the AP class, How to be a good contest holder, and I feel if there was a class or something everybody had to take or pass before being allowed to hold contests it might be a fairer situation, but as it stands we all have to set standards and hope other people will follow.
It's good that you are voicing these issues and getting it out in the open.
I wrote a poem way back in May 2006 so it just proves this an on-going issue that needs resolving

Thank you for allowing us to voice our frustrations on this topic. I appreciate the gold trophy. Congratulations to the other winners. I have found, over time, which contest judges are fair and which ones to avoid. Peace, Liz

Yup. Sometimes it's just a popularity contest, especially in an insulated group. It's who likes who best, who hasn't won in a while, who threw a pity party, who gave me a trophy.

It's hard to break out of these patterns once you're in the midst of them. It's best to resist with all you've got.
