The Somme

I recently visited the Somme Battlefields as a school trip. This has greatly affected me and I am interested in other people's perceptions.

I enjoy any poetry, especially those with a wide range of unusual vocabulary. My pet hate is forced rhyme.

No real rules - just write what you feel. Please try to comment on at least one other poem entered in this competition as it is encouraging for people to have positive feedback with constructive criticism.

Any questions please don't fail to contact me. Thank you for entering and Good Luck!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on February 27, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 50, Bronze: 25
  • Final notes:
    Thank you so much for your entries - they really were all fantastic and if I was rich you would all have points!!! I was jostling the order right to the last second. All poems had their merits;
    Never to Bloom Again: Beautiful poetic words
    Mother Remember Me: Powerful repetition and final line.
    Somme: Totally Original and cleverly crafted
    A Letter From Verdun: Emotive and oh my God the middle two lines of the penultimate stanza are gorgeous.
    Rankless Bones: Detailed and employs such clever phrases to make every day objects seem poignant.
    The War Game: Full of anger but fully justified. Clever use of language. (They know chess - I love them!!!)

    Thanks again and please keep writing!
