the roof on the government building? the lethal snake? the mining town on the Canadian shield? the pennies you don't bother to stoop for anymore? the canyon through bandito land? the taste of blood when your brother decks you?
how's a poet to choose?

Carefully.
Hi
I got an acceptance letter in the e mail box the other day, and my enthusiasm has been temporarily restored. -
-
I heard.
I gave you a wink and a nod on one of your poems to indicate I had, but I guess it was too subtle. Congratulations, that's fantastic, and it's a REAL journal with REAL poets on their roster, too! I could use a little enthusiasm boost. I could do to win a lottery too; I've heard it helps if you buy a ticket.

Where are all the snide comments on this contest? Where are the dozens of entries? Man, it's a lot of work to maintain one's fame around this joint.

Indeed. I don't think it was the subtlety as much as the cryptic name under which I think you posted. I can never sort out the wretch and the wretched.

where are all our entries.

All I can think of is that little dog in the fox and the hound... oh, and doughnut eaters.

Doh. You are one of the best critics I know on here. It is never personal and always incisive, informed and detached.
Oh and you write pretty good an' all innit, so thanks for taking the time with this.

Here's the thing..
I entered this contest because I knew you would be honest. I was looking for that. Your comment on my poem didn't bother me. I made some edits based on it, and left what I felt it needed. That's fine.
But when you go to another poet's page (and I always read all the entries in a contest) and see the judge saying how all the other poetry was bland and uninteresting, and that this was the only POEM in the contest, well, it makes me think, "I don't want a trophy because I'm the 2nd least hated."
I removed my poem because you didn't think it was one. I did not want to waste your time.
I do thank you for your honest and forward critique on my poem and for the challenge that this contest gave me, whether or not you thought my writing was poetry, I tried hard and I like the product you inspired me to write.
Thanks.

Fair enough. I can't pretend to know why poems were removed, and I don't really care if people remove their poems or not.
Running a contest obviously requires one to judge the things and rate them, etc, so that's what we did. I don't really know anything about poetry, but I am inclined to talk a lot of shit, and so there it is.

I did not remove my bland and less than acceptable entry, even though the critique you left was less than helpful. I, too, think it is bad form to remove entries, particularly when the contest has just ended and they did not win. I find it helpful if the host post the winners in the final notes so that one can go back and read the winning entries after they are removed. I always like to see why I did not win, or what drivel the host may have chosen because of personal reasons.
Congratulations to the winners in this one. -

I liked your poem. I was wondering though about this comment:
..... or what drivel the host may have chosen because of personal reasons.
What personal reasons does a judge of a poetry contest have for awarding a cyber trophy?
And what constitutes drivel, poetically?
I'm not aiming for bickering, I'm attempting to understand more the "perceived right" way to judge a poetry contest on AP.
Thanks.

I was commenting on the fact that people pull their entries as soon as the contest ends. I like to read the top placers. Sometimes I can see where I need improvement. Sometimes, I can see that the host judged not on what they claimed they wanted, but just awarded the places to friends. I also can see the hosts that truly are not aware of what they are doing and need more experience writing and reading. A lot of contests make little sense. I just like to know whose to avoid.
My whole comment was based on what THIS host said about people pulling their entries, and not a judgment of this contest or host. -
-
I wasn't thinking that you were or were not referring to this contest actually, I was wondering about more about how you decide what is drivel and I'm always attempting to get at the:
People award their friends trophies thing.
It is true but I often wonder if it is unavoidable. I often wonder if poem people simply ARE our friends because we like their poetry better than other poetry -- not saying it is right because I do think it is a judge's responsibility to be as fair as humanly possible on this site - which is difficult and I do think the judge should remember the guidelines they have laid out and keep the poem first not the person who wrote it
but being around a long time and having hosted a fair number of contests, I am sometimes faced with awarding trophies to the people on my favorites list because, for me, they have, in my judgment submitted the best poems to the contest. And then I get worried and torqued up thinking that if I award them trophies, people will say "she always awards trophies to her friends."
And I was just wondering if other people ever felt that way etc. -
-
Truthfully, I have awarded favourites trophies in some of my contests, but they met the requirements that I set. I do not sweat that so much. I actually entered a contest where the host changed the entire focus of the contest half way through. Of course, some of the entries no longer fit. She also got nasty when politely called on it. I sometimes wounder if there should not be a minimum membership period before one is able to host a contest. I know that is unrealistic on a site this large, but it is an idea.
