Memories of Animals - How they Live and Die

I had an experience with an animal the other day and wrote a poem I am going to transcribe here. I hope it will inspire some pieces about memories of animals you have known and how they lived and died. They can be humourous or serious and may take any form. Not more than 60 lines please.

Here's my poem:

ON THE DEATH OF A FISH

The fish has died, he's gone tits up
And drinks from an eternal cup
Of water that is pure and clear,
More pure than any he got here.

He shuffled off this mortal coil.
His life was one devoid of toil
He swam around his bowl all day.
It wasn't work, it wasn't play.

A daily sprinkle of food, I was told,
But now he lies there, still and cold.
I fed the fish, I watched him swim.
To find him thus is mighty grim.

Perhaps the cat stood down beneath,
Beneath his bowl, with gnashing teeth
And staring eyes and savage breath.
Perhaps he scared the fish to death.

I'm the catsitter. I took care
Of Cat and her finny friend lying there.
For just a moment, I mourn the lost,
Then decide I must cover the cost.

So there you are. May this little ditty spur you on to a poetic effort of some kind. Maybe you'll remember a time when the death of an animal made you feel responsible in some way or maybe your thoughts will turn in a somewhat different direction. It's quite open and just has to deal with memories of an animal.
