Alex Grey is an extraordinary artist.  Just today I was introduced to his work by PlayfulPassion (Joy).  After viewing his Gallery.  I did some research.  His works have mesmerized me, and I need to share them with you.  There is one called "Visions" that left me sitting in my seat staring far too long.  Here is the link, spend as long as you possibly can with this:

http://www.alexgrey.net/edia-content.html

Here is a bit of a Bio that I got from; Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Alex Grey (born November 29, 1953 in Columbus, Ohio) is an artist specializing in spiritual and psychedelic art (or visionary art) that is sometimes associated with the New Age movement. Alex Grey is a Vajrayana practitioner. His oeuvre spans a variety of forms including performance art, process art, installation art, sculpture, and painting. Grey is a member of the Integral Institute. He is also on the board of advisors for the Center for Cognitive Liberty and Ethics, and is the Chair of Wisdom University's Sacred Art Department. He and his wife Allyson Grey are the co-founders of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, aka CoSM, a non-profit institution supporting Visionary Culture in New York City.

Here is an interview on YouTube:

Here is a short tour of his Gallery:

What I want for this Challenge:

Put your poetic, visionary soul into your poetry, just as this insightful artist has done with his work..

There are no restrictions.

You can use rhyme, free verse, and form poetry.

Please do not write a novel, that is not what I am looking for.

I too will enter a poem here because I am awe-inspired by his work.  The poem that comes closest to what I write will be the Gold Winner.

Winner take all for 2,500 points.  I may even give a Silver, Bronze and Honorable Mention of high point value, but that will be decided once all the entries are posted.

I will post my entry on the contest page just before the judging process is completed.

PlayfulPassion is not required to post a poem.  Although, she can if she wishes.

You have two weeks to write.  Please, no rush, take your time, study his artful hand, and allow it to influence yours.

I am hoping that Alex Grey strikes your intuitiveness as he has struck mine.

ENJOY!

Thanks JOY!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on December 30, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 2500, Silver: 500, Bronze: 250, Honorable mention: 13 people
  • Final notes:

PLEASE LEAVE ALL POETRY POSTED HERE, IF YOU WOULDN'T MIND!

I have contacted the artist Alex Grey and invited him here to read the words that his art inspired. This is the content of the email:

    December 30, 2007

    Dear Mr. Grey,

I was introduced to your art by a friend.
After being awestruck, I was inspired to hold a contest to see what words evolved from poets at allpoetry.com as being inspired by your visuals.

    http://allpoetry.com/contest/2382002

Then, I wrote a poem of my own as inspired by your work.

    http://allpoetry.com/poem/3750563

I would be honored if you, Alex Grey would take a look, and respond at the outpour of love, and respect for your visionary art.

    Sincerely,

    Renee Matthews-Jackson
    Cleveland, Ohio

    New Ticket #4770

THANK YOU to ALL the Poets who took time to visit the sites of Alex Grey and submit their inspired works. I too am a fan of visual art but this artist seemed to be far more. He reaches into the spirit of the world and shares his vision with chalk, paint, and strokes of brush.

This was not an easy contest to judge but I have found that none on this site are because of the genius in talent we are fortunate enough to have here.

You have blessed me with these words of pure artistry. Every poem was well received and exceedingly well written.

As I mentioned on the contest page. I chose the work that most reminded me of how I was inspired to write from his works.

    MY CHOICES ARE:

    ~GOLD WINNER~

    -On Sublime Seraphic Wings-

"My heart explodes with colour in carmine, citrine, and cream, while my soul explores each line and loft and hears a minor musical lift. Rainbows from ethereal
realms run mystic rivers in my mind, as their prismatic auras provides perfect placid peace. Celestial shades and chromas pervade each daub and drip and dash."

    ~SILVER WINNER~

    -A Visionary-

"A rainbow connection; the aura so defined
surreal yet, to those in tuned ably refined
    the cosmos renditions amorphous editions
    become discourse echoing mystical glories"

    ~BRONZE WINNER~

    -Underneath skin-

"painting you into my mind one
small brush stroke at a time
with visions fully alive in blues
    and greens

    I imagine Autumn leaves falling
in vivid hues of red-gold color
-a ritual dance of seasons in
    painted pigments forever floating
    with grace"

Initially, I was going to award 2,500 points - winner take all. That was near impossible so, I had to add Silver and Bronze. Then, I got inspired even further and added Honorable Mentions to the rest of the entries because EVERYONE did an outstanding job, and I could see Alex Grey's brush strokes in each poem submitted!

    Again...THANK YOU ALL!

Have a Blessed and Prosperous New Year~

    Much Love Always ♥

My poem will not be submitted until after the contest is judged. It will be posted on the contest page for all to see. Use your own ingenious stroke of the pen. I will not read the entries before writing mine. I don't want to be influenced by what anyone writes. I do hope you enter a poem.

I love Alex Grey's work I actually found him through Tool (the band); he does a lot of work for them, or they use his works. Either way, he's a fantastic artist.
    Good luck with your contest

What amazed me was his YouTube interview and his vision of 911. He is something. I am glad Joy shared his talents and insight with me. It was my responsibility to share it with you.

    Thank you!!!

Poetryality for introducing me to this amazing talent a pure inspiration; all forms of art become each other when we have mind & soul to embrace each... brush, ink, or instrument they all resound through the cosmos a symphony when embraced

Thank you so much Renee for the inspiration that this contest brought to me. What wonderful art and inspiration this man does. It awakened feelings in me that I never knew existed before and for that I thank you. Congrats to all who entered, I believe I read all of these poems and forgive me if I did not comment as the holidays had me pressed for time. They were all brilliant in their own unique way. Again I thank you and have a blessed new year!
