Philosophical Poetry

Everyone has their own philosophy, whether it's borrowed or original doesn't matter, the point is that you have one! Now, I've seen a few poems out there that attempt to answer some 'big questions', but I haven't seen many of those here. I want you guys to think, really think about life, what you're doing, what you're thinking, and why you think those things. Then write a poem about it!

Rules:

1. Can be any poetic format (ex. freeverse, rhyme, sonnet, etc.) but it must be a poem

2. Must have some sort of question that's being answered and the question must be clear. This doesn't mean that you have to spell it out and say "What is life? Life is...", but somehow make it so that the audience can know what you're talking about even though it's not extremely obvious.

3. Length doesn't matter, but keep in mind that philosophies are often really 'deep' so it shouldn't be extremely short, and too lengthy can overload the mind.

4. nO sTicKY cAps (or any other hard to read format)

5. Prewrites allowed, but I think it'll be hard to find one that's already formatted to fit this contest. If you do find one though, feel free to enter it!

6. Ages 13-30 only. The point of this contest is to get you guys to start thinking about life during this pivotal stage of 'transition' from youth to adulthood. Younger than 13 may not be enough to think too deeply, and the older guys already know the answers to life haha.

7. I see that it's hard to choose which poems to enter, so I'll allow up to 2 poems per person, 40 poems total for now. Haha I have a feeling I'm going to regret this when judging but there it is!

8. I may add others as potential problems arise, but for now, think and write!

I URGE YOU GUYS TO LOOK THROUGH THOSE AS A GUIDELINE TO WHAT YOU SHOULD BE WRITING. So far, people are having trouble understanding what I mean by philosophical. Ask questions if you're confused!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on December 24, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 1 people
  • Final notes:
Alright guys, winners are up. I must say, as my first contest, I was surprised it ran so smoothly. You guys submitted wonderful poetry and gave me virtually no trouble at all, for that I humbly thank you! As for the winners, I won't say this was a hard competition to judge like many do, because I believe the winners were well-deserving and stood out...that's why they won! For those of you who didn't, don't give up I still enjoyed the read and enjoyed finding the thought process behind the writer through this philosophical prompt. I hope you guys got as much out of this as I did, I hope you all learned something new about yourself, life, anything! Remember, philosophy and poetry are in essence one, just keep those fingers typing and never lose sight of your true thoughts. Learn to question!

just a note, if as i read through these and I don't add you to the finalists list...you can feel free to remove your poem and enter another one as many times as you wish, or remove them, tweak them, and then re-enter them. Also, if you're not on the finalists list yet, you may still be, i'm just in a little hurry right now, dentist appointment! ha

Blast! Quite a lot of my poetry is philosophical. Though it's refreshing to see that I'm actually too OLD for something.

If you're looking for philosophy, check out some of my stuff. (shameless plug)

    My poem

To help you further understand my poem "The Requiem" I just want to give you a brief understanding as it may be considered long by some. It is an explains the archetypes of religion and how it culturally influences the area in the story. Some of the comments on my work do help explain such as Danneh's comments.

I also forgot to mention that it is a journey into my head as all of the characters are what I think would represent my subconscious mind. They are a representation of theologies and what is or is not similar with those theologies. In sort it is about the Divine. Also to understand the reference to the numbers you would have to see a note of mine which can be found on kingpoets.com.

Erm ... I am 31, but what about a prewrite that is just perfect for the contest, and was written when I was 29?

unless there's a way you can prove that it was written when you were 29, i'm afraid I'll have to say no

Oops, guess it was actually 2 months and 23 days after my 30th birthday.
I was born on 6 September 1976; I don't feel comfortable emailing a copy of my birth certificate, so if that's the kind of thing you're looking for, then yeah, I suppose it's just hard luck for me.

Here is a paste of the poem's time stamp.

Here is a paste of the listing of trophies the poem won before I turned 31. The poem is still posted in all of them, though I'm not sure how you'd go about checking these reference without compromising anonymity.
