 Lyndon's Contest # 30

 Do write a beautiful piece of verse of 12 to 14 lines in honor of Margaret's FIFTIETH birthday. [December 11th].

ANY SUBJECT (TOPIC) IS IN ORDER AS LONG AS IT IS DEDICATED TO MARGARET.

Although Margaret's favoured form is the SONNET, for this contest, you get to choose your own form.

All in the contest will vote for the five best poems in the contest (but do not vote for yourself). It would be wonderful to comment as well, but not until the contest has been judged, as per mission statement of the Winklings.

I must say that Margaret is a poet that I love, and it is possible, I think, to love in a Platonic way, at this place, because the soul is so much in evidence in fine poems. Ron.

As Margaret is a very fine poet, try to keep your standard right up there!

I, personally, have donated 1000 points for Gold. [This is not from the Winkletown Bank Account.]

JUDGING: Could each Winkling Entrant please send me their five choices [1 to 5, please] ASAP? Thank-you.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on December 17, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 1000, Silver: 500, Bronze: 280, Honorable mention: 1 people
  • Final notes:
    In judging this contest, I did not mind comments along the way before I played my part in the judging process. If you read my comments, you can see that I am my own man. In future, comments during the contest will be encouraged. I have completely changed my mind on this one!
    Congratulations to all who pleased Margaret with your efforts. This has been a wonderful time in the life of the Group, Winklings.
    All received votes from someone else.
    However, in totalling, only four stood out from the others. Therefore, there is one fewer HM this time. Sorry.
    First, with Gold, is Keith's "Auld Lang Syne".
    Second, with Silver, is Melodies, "I Watched the Birthday Sky Turn Violet".
    Deecrepit(Terry) won the Bronze Trophy with "Celebrating Your Fifty Years, Margaret."
    Very close behind comes myrataal with her Honorable Mention for "Fifty? Yay!".

    Vera Rich, although apparently ascerbic at times, is really not so but a great help and source of information and helpfulness. She wins 400 points for consistent critiquing in spite of eye trouble.
    Ron.

    Ron, what a smashing idea!!!
    I hope there will be loads of entries.

    I do not know her that well I am afraid,
    to be able to write anything but:

    "Margaret you are a very good poet;
    I love the poems written by you".

    I wish Margaret a wonderful 50th birthday
    and many happy returns.

    Anna.

    I don't know ...

    if I'm up to it, as I'm not feeling at all well, and it takes a lot of effort for me to write anything anymore. If I am able, I'll try to do something, but I'm not up to making any promises.

    In any case, Happy Birthday Margaret.

    I had thought this would be a fine

    idea. I do think that the fault lies nowhere in particular. Margaret's friends seem a little apprehensive about placing their poems here. Margaret could well be embarrassed as I am. Anna's birthday contest for me was not rushed but I was still over the moon by the poems of those who did enter. Maybe, birthday honorees will just have to get good wishes in future because, unlike teenagers, we do not burst out all over with third rate verse! (Apologies to child prodigies!]

    I'm so happy to see a birthday contest for Margaret. She's one in a million, a talented lady and a wonderful person

    But... but... there's a big mistake in her age... she's still 29 I thought

    Is this contest for Winklings members only. though?

    Dear Lyndon,

    You recently requested me to enter this contest
    that you’ve organised for MargaretG’s birthday.
    Although she knows I think that she is just ‘one of the best’,
    she knows I don’t participate in contests any way.

    Like most, apart from poetry, I have another life
    and Margaret understands my rule and reason
    whereby most of my time is taken caring for my wife
    and home throughout each month, whate’er the season.

    Everybody has a birthday and my friends’ I recognise
    by (personally) sending them a card.
    That it’s Margaret’s half century, I fully realise
    and I know that she won’t take my non-participation hard.

    To Margaret, my “Sonnet Queen” I shall, in my own way,
    send love and hugs and greetings for her fiftieth birthday.

    ~~~
    That I have taken time to comment here is, in itself, an exception to my rule which
    is an indication of my love and esteem for Margaret and I applaud your contest and wish all entrants the best of luck.
    Sincerely, Hugh Wyles. 11/12/07.
      Thank you so much, Hugh
      I do not get TIME for contests much, either. Funny thing, that.
    What a lovely surprise! Thank you for the silver trophy!
    The entries in this contest were especially fine, so I am doubly, yea... even MORE grateful to have won a trophy. My best hugs to all who entered their beautiful poems here.
    I'm touched to have received the gold
    Fifty's not really very old
    Youth's in the heart, I'm often told
    So, MargaretG
    I'm sure your heart will Springtime hold
    Eternally
