superstitions & bits of yarn

Fair Seed-time: A Tale
Sarah Hannah (1967 - 2007)

“Fair seed-time had my soul, and I grew up
Fostered alike by beauty and by fear.”
—Wordsworth

A pregnant woman can’t afford to laugh off
Superstition. March, she pads cautiously along the river.
She is startled by the sudden pronouncements
Of crocuses, a hand of them lighting all at once.

She thinks the pheasant notices and is spooked
By them also. April, she hangs red around the nursery—
Cloaks and yarns, a pompon on the crib—a Jewish charm
To ward off evil. She turns her paintings of skulls to the wall,

Commences a different style: across turbid seas,
A flotsam of Redonesque flowers.
She doesn’t drink or smoke.
She’s careful not to stand too many hours.

The first of June, eight p.m., certificate of live birth:
WITNESS MY HAND
AND THE SEAL OF THE CITY REGISTRAR.
After digits, limbs, and breath are all accounted for,

The notary will make several typographical errors:
The child’s name will lose all hs. He’ll ask the mother’s
Occupation, and when she tells him artist
He’ll type housewife.

A side effect of labor will occur:
The skin beneath her thumbs will flush
And mottle, deeply red—
A permanent crimson at the palms.

As I was informed in my last contest that I hinder poets with too many restrictions, I have none in this contest.

Be warned that elementary rhyme, center align and quick, thoughtless entries will most likely not win or receive anything but a "thanks for entering" comment.

Be proud of your poem
edit
proof-read
and enter something the judge
would be likely to award a trophy to.

This contest will be open for 2 weeks. No need to rush an entry in.

    Love this contest!

Your restrictions are only restrictions to those who can't write, my dear.

    ...

I really love this poem, but I'm kind of afraid to write anything because I might just, in a way, copy it... you know? I will ponder, and try to write something suitable.

It really is a lovely poem, isn't it? I found it while combing through lit mags and knew I had to hold a contest and get the poem out there to others. Which is mainly why I hold these contests. Well, that and to provide some inspiration.

There are so many prompts within the poem. Yours needn't be about superstitions or expecting or anything so blaring. Anything within the poem can be considered a prompt.

      Hope you can make it.

    Bookmarked!

Personally, I love restrictions, they sharpen the skill. But then that's crazy Ole Me. LOL I also like the fact that you unearth some marvelous writers. Thanks for that!

    Much Love ♥
