Here is an item from "The Manchester Guardian" dated 3 August 1822.
Write a poem inspired by this proud piece of military history.
"Prior to the Queen's Regiment marching from Hull through York, on
their route to Ireland, Private John Furnel was tried by a court martial
for having in his possession a silver spoon stolen from the mess.
He was sentenced to 300 lashes, which punishment was inflicted. It was
found requisite that he should be admitted to the hospital, but
after lingering in great torture, he expired. One who went to view the
body said, 'The bones of the back were as bare of flesh as if they
had been scraped with a knife'."
I eagerly await your contributions.
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on November 28, 2007
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes: Well, well, well. Only two entries, which is pretty pathetic. Mercifully they were both good (one was brilliant). Better to have two gems than twenty pieces of dross I suppose.

Gold at last
A shame there weren't more entries, as the actress said to the bishop. I am still very honoured by the gold trophy. Next time, post a contest called "I want to feel your pain - a contest about doomed love affairs/suicide/cutting/imbecility". In my experience, such contests attract many entries of superlative quality! (Few people enter my contests either) -

This is true. Your contest idea has some merit. I shall try one like that.

Thanks, Edna!
Such a shame there weren't more entries.
Well done, Keith!
