I've been toying with this idea for some time now, and now's your chance to impress me. I've read a lot of shitty entries about suicide on AP (in fact, I don't think I've read a decent one), and I'd love to read something fantastic about suicide and/or self-harm.
You may post:
1) Poems about suicide and self-harm only. You may write about how someone close to you took his/her life, your experiences with these topics, or anything about suicide. I prefer beautiful, haunting pieces (especially freeverse that means and shows something) to your run-of-the-mill emo poetry. Take the time to write amazing pieces. Above all, BE ORIGINAL. Also, note the title; I will not award poems a trophy because they are "sad." There is more to poetry than the sentiment.
2) As many poems as you'd like.
3) Poems with cussing, although I'd prefer if you didn't rely on obscenities to make a point.
You may not post:
1) Shitty and/or mediocre poems. Well, technically you can, but they won't win. I reward art, not the typical emo slop churned out by the masses.
2) ANYTHING CATEGORISED AS ADULT, ABUSE, OR EROTICA!
3) Biographies, autobiographies, and excessively long prose. (Short prose pieces are fine, but I am a prose Nazi, and thus your style, presentation, and overall diction will be important. If you are not compelling and your style is as attractive as a tutu-clad Elton John with third-degree burns all over his body, bid adieu to the hope of a trophy.)
Note: I'm a harsh judge. If you cannot handle criticism, do not enter. If I don't get any good entries, I will delete the contest; however, if the entries are good, I will add more points.
I may or may not comment on your entries, as I feel I'm going to have to rehash a lot of the same criticism to a seemingly infinite number of poets. You may be disqualified without a comment; if you would like criticism, feel free to message me with the title of your poem & I'll be more than willing to give an honest critique. (As an aside, I'm usually nicer when you ask for criticism.)
Poor spelling and grammar will count against you. Netspeak will, too; please make your work look professional before entering!
