Welcome to the first annual Raven Contest.
____________________________________________________
Introduction
Greetings. Now that the our inaugural year is almost complete, it is time for you, Allpoetry.com site members, to let us know how we did. What we are looking for are prose comments from anyone who either entered the contest this year, watched it from afar or heard about it from family or friends.
It is not necessary for you have entered the Raven this year to participate in this feedback contest.
On Content
Winning entries will contain an honest and thorough critique of multiple aspects of the 2007 Raven as well as suggesting improvements and changes for the future. Remarks should be qualified by examples and avoid obtuse or vauge language (ex: "the promos sucked").
However, if you are just interested in dropping us a quick note we'd love to hear from you as well. One or two line entries that give a general opinion regarding the contest overall are appreciated, but probably won't be winners.
On Time-frame
Per standard Raven operating procedure this contest will be open from 11/01/07 until 12/01/07. Site assigned end dates will be adjusted as needed to meet this time-frame. Judging will be held from 12/01/07 until 01/01/08.
On Rules
As with all Raven contests, qualifying rounds and special events this contest is governed by the RCR (as applicable) and entrants are encouraged (but not required) to review the rules as supplied there.
Remember that we are looking for prose entries only. Entries in poetic form will be removed at the discretion of the contest judges. If this happens, please do not be discouraged: just re-enter in keeping with the rules.
If you are incapable of containing your comments civilly please do not post your entry here . Entries along the lines of "you guys suck more than I thought anyone or anything could possibly suck, and your mothers all wear combat boots" will probably a) be removed and b) not be winners.

So come on in and join what will be the last Raven endeavor for 2007. We're hoping to provide a fun chance for you to add some trophies to your collection while playing a role in crafting future contests. (Also, if you are interested in judging the Raven next year, or working as staff member, please do not hesitate to mention that in your entry.)
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on December 5, 2007
- Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 150, Bronze: 75, Honorable mention: 3 people
- Final notes: A big thank you for everyone who took the time out of her or his day to give us feedback on the inaugural year for the Raven Contest.
Some of your ideas will be assimilated into future contests. Even though the turnout for the feedback contest was extremely low we believe that it was worth it if the fruit is even one good idea.
We hope to see you all in 2008.
Sincerely,
~ The RC Team

Things I liked:
I like the breakdown and details and work that went into the comments... you seem to seriously take each poem as its own.• Commented on by judge. [remove] - Error: Unable to find finalist item 3661358, it seems to have been deleted :( [remove]

Actually I think the Raven Contest should be a tri-monthly contest series...• Commented on by judge. [remove]

I honestly felt the contest took itself FAR TOO SERIOUSLY. I entered the on of the 1st rounds or whatever and won it (again: or whatever) but could not be bothered to enter for the final. Not enough humour, too serious, even pretentious. Lighten up, guys.

Certainly the contest is not for everyone. People use writing as an outlet in many different ways, some more seriously than others. The goal for the contest this year was to reward writers who took their work seriously. To respond in a cavalier or humorous way would have been a disservice and turned the enterprise into a lie.
The fact that there is money to won in the contest also underscores the need to take it seriously so that entrants do not feel cheated.
That said, your point does not fall on deaf ears. The humor category just barely missed the cut for the qualifying rounds this year, and it will probably replace Erotica in 2008.
Thanks for stopping by, and congratulations on your qualifying round win. -
I think a humour category would go down very well in the Raven Contest and it just narrowly missed the boat this year. Many of the poems entered into the contest were of a serious nature and I would have liked to see a little more humour myself, especially after I judged the dark category lol.

I felt touched to see your additions to people's guestbooks notifying them that they were qualifiers. It left a very positive impression and seemed very pro-active for poetry. I even had an entry to one of my contests mentioning it in their poem.

Thanks! Now if we could just get the HTML to work for the final round winners...

Thanks for the comment ea. It's good to know the Raven Contest is written about or even spoken about as it could encourage more enties for next year.

Amera, our records show:
Your entry ‘Aroused’ in the Preliminary Erotica Category of the Raven Contest was commented on and won a placing. http://allpoetry.com/contest/2352380
In the final round your entry ‘Rose For All Seasons’ (a compilation of 4 sonnets) was read and commented on.

Well.
I thought that some of the judges did not appreciate all of the styles of poetry that were entered.
I suggest that for the next contest you get a variety of judges that like different styles of writing, so that the contest might be a little more fair.
Thanks

I agree with the premise if your comment in that the boarder the judge base is the more fair and considered the contest would be. I urge you to remember that this was our very first year. An international judge pool was assembled and extensive regulations for both judges and entrants were created.
Inherently the issue is whether or not a large amount of people are going to be willing to undertake this commitment. If you are serious about improving the contest in years to come, you should apply to be a judge. -
This year’s contest was judged by an international panel of judges who have experience in numerous and varied genre and style. To be able to cover every single aspect of poetry would be a massive undertaking and very dependant on the number of judges available.
Perhaps authors of more obscure genre or style should consider adding a little information to their author notes as judges found it very helpful this year.

how can one who is confident in his writing have a chance to enter when the contest owner have not read his work. Do you or do you have it based on those you heard before...
-
-
I am not quite sure that I understand the substance of your post. All entries are read and commented on, if that is your question.
