I was talking to a friend recently about what some song lyrics meant and, of course, we both had very different interpretations. Actually, she said, 'Really? I never would have thought of THAT.' So, I'd like to know just how random and twisted my thought process IS compared to other people.
I've listed, below, some of my favourite quotes. My interpretations of them are, obviously, very personal and very dear (otherwise they wouldn't be my favourites, would they?). I want to know what they bring to your mind when you first read them.
Don’t try to figure out what the words were originally intended to mean OR what they might mean to other people (e.g. me). This contest is about YOUR unique take on the world. So, if you’ve ever pointed out something you think is completely obvious and received a baffled stare and a ‘Your so random,’ in response, this contest is for you!
RULES:
- YoU wRiTe LiKe ThIs AnD yOu WiLl Be ImIdIaTlY dQeD
- You must copy-and-paste the quote relevant to your poem into ‘Author's Notes’
- You may enter more than one poem, but each poem needs to be based on a different quote.
- You can include direct quotes from the quotes if you like but, remember, it’s about what the words mean not the words themselves
- I'm accepting pre-writes, but you still need to state in ‘Author's Notes’ which of the provided quotes it's relevant to. If you don't or if I consider it irrelevant, I will DQ.
- Your poem may be of any style/content but if I judge it to be deliberately offensive that poem will be DQed
I’ve deliberately left out the quotes’ references so their original context doesn’t prejudice your interpretation.
Have fun. Be yourself.
And here are the quotes…
Quote 1:
One's real life is so often the life that one does not lead.
Quote 2:
Sparrow: I love old things. They make me feel sad.
Nightingale: What's good about sad?
Sparrow: It's happy for deep people.
Quote 3:
Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.
Quote 4:
Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; And therefore is wing'd Cupid painted blind.
Quote 5:
The average life is full of near misses and absolute hits, of great love and small disasters.
It's made up of banana milkshakes, loft insulation, and random shoes.
It's dead ordinary and truly, truly amazing.
What you've got to realise is it's all here now.
So breathe deep and swallow it whole because take it from me, life just whizzes by.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on October 22, 2007
- Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 4 people
- Final notes: THINGS I’VE LEARNED ABOUT RUNNING POETRY CONTESTS:
ONE: It’s insane to try to run a poetry contest whilst in the middle of an exam block.
TWO: The deadline extensions made necessary by the exam block are worth it, because I get to read even more terrific entries.
THREE: Deadline extensions mean so many terrific entries that it’s necessary to rope in an Assistant Judge.
FOUR: Even with an Assistant Judge helping narrow down the finalists, be prepared to award unplanned HMs due to quality and number of entries.
The criteria your poems were judged on were the ability to use a provided quote as basis for illustrating YOUR unique take on the world. ‘Be yourself.’ I said, thus making my job of judging all the more difficult. Told you I was insane! But, in the end, certain poem stood out for their originality in the ways the quotes were incorporated. Also, particularly in the cases of Gold, Silver and Bronze, the winning poems so convinced me that, even though I know the quotes’ origins and contexts, I could swear that those quote had been written specifically to describe your poems. That’s right, some of you made me believe that Shakespeare was writing about you! I confess to some influence by which poems kept singing their words in my head long after reading them.
When looking at my list of finalists list, you’ll see I lean towards a darer style. Whether it’s a wicked sense of humour or the search for a flicker of hope in the blackness. So, on behalf of my Assistant Judge (who’s better adjusted than me) I’ll be awarding another prize. The Yellow Rose Award. This award is not related to competition criteria but is for an outstanding poem in it’s own right that captures a sense of goodness and beauty.
I will be giving feedback on all poems entered in this competition but due to my exams this will be done gradually so that I can give each piece of feedback the attention it deserves.
